Stefan French is a Dublin based composer and freelance musician. He has
completed the 'Composition for Film/TV' course at Berklee College of Music in
Boston and is currently active as a film composer whilst finishing his BMus in
Composition at the DIT Conservatory of Music in Dublin, Ireland.
He set up his home studio in 2009 and since then has gone on to score many
shorts, corporate videos, documentaries and promos both in Ireland and in the US for
the likes of Intel, Avaya, Lily O'Briens Chocolates, The Mill Theatre and Breast
Cancer Ireland. Most recently he finished scoring the Award-winning Irish made
feature, ‘Fractional’, which received its premier in Los Angeles in late March 2012.
He has also gained credits as a copyist, an orchestrator, music supervisor and music
editor. He is a registered member of the Irish Film and Television Academy. (Credits
list overleaf)
As a member of FAS Screen Training Ireland, he attended a film scoring
seminar with Emmy-award winning composer William Ross (Ladder 49, The Tale of
Despereaux) in late 2009 and most recently he attended a series of seminars with
Golden Globe-nominated composer Christopher Young (Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider,
The Hurricane, Entrapment, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2).
He is currently studying composition with Jane O'Leary in the DIT. This gives
him the opportunity to regularly work alongside the Concorde Ensemble (artists in
residence) and other professional artists and groups. His concert works have been
performed by the DIT Symphony Orchestra, the Concorde Ensemble and members of
the RTE Concert Orchestra. He received a commission from distinguished clarinettist,
Paul Roe, to compose a new work for bass clarinet in 2011.
Stefan’s primary instrument is the viola and he studies with David O'Doherty
at the DIT Conservatory. Stefan studied piano for 2 years in the DIT with Maeve
McSweeney and Peter Sweeney. As a viola player he is a member of The Hibernian
Orchestra (acting stage and rehearsals manager for 2011/12), the DIT Symphony
Orchestra, The Phoenix Orchestra and, in late 2010, Stefan was principal viola in the
X-NYOI 40th Anniversary gala concert at The National Concert Hall. With these
orchestras he has performed an extensive amount of orchestral repertoire and has
toured worldwide to Italy, France, Scotland, England and China. He regularly
performs with smaller ensembles and groups; the most vibrant of these being in
collaboration with Camerata Ireland, directed by Barry Douglas and conducted by
world famous composer Krzysztof Penderecki. Stefan also plays in quartets and trios
and is mentored by the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet within the DIT. He regularly plays for
recording sessions, weddings, functions, etc. He is represented by the music
management agency, Avoca Music, as a viola player in the Avoca Quartet.
