Time in Live Sound & Silent Motion Picture Live Electro/Acoustic Music for Silent Film Screening, By Yael Acher “kat” Modiano, Flute, Effects, and prepared Electronic tracks. ‘Time in Live Sound’ is a “real-time” response to a time based artifact of cinema from another era, produced a century ago. As a flutist / composer working with multi- media, as well as a film aficionado, Modiano is taking the tradition of live music accompaniment of silent films to a new level of experimentation, merging the two eras and genres, resulting in a sophisticated yet highly emotional art-performance hybrid. The expressive lurking, seemingly slow -motion yet intense pace in which the camera portrays the actors and scenery- inspired Modiano to create the film score. Like the camera’s lens, the soundtrack aims at capturing the film’s delicate nuances of subconscious undercurrents. Human psychology appears timeless, cutting through history, simultaneously illuminating and eliminating time. Modiano’s live audio performance and attire enhances the contrast to the moving visuals of this genuine documentation of the 1910’s -1920’s early Modernism- living from Art Deco architecture, interior and industrial design, to fashion, and social codes. Acher-Modiano has been performing this project in multiple film festivals and cinemas, in New York, Bern, and Copenhagen. Coming up in 2013 she will perform in Tel Aviv, Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver, Boston and more. Numerous grants and awards, including most recently by Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and Emergency Grant, from New York City, have supported her projects.
