Jupiter BY JAKE S. BULKLEY BY Jake TABLE OF CONTENTS • • • • • • • • KING OF THE PLANETS MOONS THE ROTATION THE RED SPOT THE LOCATION EXPLORING JUPITER GLOSSERY INDEX King of the Planets • I bet you are all wondering where Jupiter's name came from. It came from a Roman god named Jupiter. He was the ruler of all the gods. Since Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system it is called Jupiter . MOONS • Jupiter has 63 moons in all but the 4 Jupiter's moons that I am going to tell you about are the most popular. The first is Io .Then there is Ganymede. This moon is bigger then planet Mercury. Then there is Europa. It is so cold and icy. Then last but not least … Calisto!!!!! THE ROTATION • Like all the other planets Jupiter spins. Earth spins around every 24 hours, but Jupiter spins around every 9 to 10 hours. Also Earth orbits the sun every year, but it takes Jupiter 12 Earth years to orbit the sun. Jupiter also has an axis which is slightly tilted. So that makes a day on Jupiter less then 10 hours . THE RED SPOT • Some might think the red spot on Jupiter is just a cloud, but they are wrong. The red spot is a hurricane on Jupiter that is 3 times as big as Earth. The hurricane has been going on for over 400 years. It is the biggest storm in the known universe. THE LOCATION • The distance of Jupiter and the sun is 483.78 million miles apart. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. Jupiter has a very crowded neighborhood. It has Mars before it and Saturn after it. It has several rings clenched together. EXPLORING JUPITER 400 years ago Jupiter, a massive, windy planet, was born. But something amazing happened in 1971 and this is why we know all about Jupiter. VOYAGER 2 went to learn more about Jupiter. Then in 1986 NASA launched another ship, but 36 seconds after lift off it exploded. There is so much more to learn about Jupiter, but this is all I know . THE END Voyager 2 getting into Jupiter's orbit Glossary Clenched-----------------------is something and something squished together . Distance------------------------is how far a thing is . Hurricane----------------------is a big, windy storm . Orbit-----------------------------is a circle a planet spins around every year.
