Buddhist Education and Outreach Program
Our program offers classes for people interested in a wide range
of subjects relating to Buddhism and in particular Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
Courses will be taught by the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple
ministers and lecturers who have attained special training and deep
knowledge of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. The classes are open to temple
members and members of the greater community who are seeking to learn
the teachings of Buddha. We have arranged the courses so that you may
attend as many classes as you wish.
For the Essential Buddhism course that starts on Sunday, August
1st, the registration is now open. The last day to register is August 1st.
For other courses, you may register from now until one week
before the classes start. Please use the attached registration form.
Please contact our office at 1427 South Main Street, Seattle, WA

Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple
Seattle Buddhist Temple was established in 1901 at a rented
facility on 6th Avenue South and South Main Street in Seattle. The first
building was dedicated in 1908 at 1020 South Main Street. When the
city’s Yesler Housing Project forced the temple building to be torn down
in 1939, the temple was moved to the current location at 1427 South Main
Street where a new facility was dedicated in the fall of 1941. World War
II forced the temple to be shut down and the ministers and the members
were all incarcerated in internment camps until 1946.
As the temple members resettled after internment, activities
resumed. Today, the Seattle Buddhist Temple holds weddings, funerals,
religious services, educational programs, various sports and cultural
activities. The popular Bon Odori Festival the temple hosts every July is
based on an important religious and cultural tradition and is participated
by many members of the community.
