Main Idea: (ORIGINS)
1. Detail: Siddhārtha _GAUTAMA_ was the son of a princely family in a small kingdom
in the foothills of the _HIMALAYA MTS.__ in what is today part of southern
__NEPAL____.
2. Detail: In his late twenties he set out to find a solution to the pain of
__ILLNESS__ , the sorrow of ___DEATH__ , and the effects of __OLD
AGE_______ on ordinary people. HE WAS SEARCHING FOR THE CAUSE OF
HUMAN SUFFERING.
3. Detail: After a period of _SELF-DENIAL (“ASCETICS”) did not yield results, he
turned to __MEDITATION______ and found __ENLIGHTENMENT____.
4. Detail: Though it may have begun as an attempt to reform _HINDUISM_ ,
___BUDDHISM___ became a new religion, dedicated to __FOLLOWING THE

1. Detail: In Buddhism, _BODHI__ , or wisdom, is a key step in achieving

The Buddha taught a path of __WISDOM___ he called the __THE
MIDDLE PATH___ , also known as the _NOBLE EIGHTFOLD___ Path to
enlightenment. HE TAUGHT THAT SUFFERING IS UNIVERSAL BECAUSE OF
DESIRE TO SATISFY OURSELVES; SO TO END SUFFERING HUMANS MUST
END DESIRE FOR SELFISH GOALS.
3. Detail: Siddhārtha accepted the idea of __REINCARNATION__ but rejected the
Hindu _____CASTE__ system and Hinduism’s multitude of ___GODS______.
4. Detail:
Over time, Siddhārtha agreed to accept __WOMEN_ into the
Buddhist _____MONASTIC__ order, and though they held an INFERIOR__
position, their status was higher in Buddhist societies than elsewhere.
