What is the High Risk
Breast Cancer Program?
The High Risk Breast Cancer Program is a
comprehensive program for women at increased
risk of developing breast cancer. Our team of
breast care specialists can provide you and your
family members with:
 Breast cancer risk assessment
 A breast exam by a breast care specialist
 Genetic counseling and testing
 A personalized screening and prevention plan
Are You At Risk for Breast Cancer?
If someone in your family has had breast cancer,
it is natural to be concerned about your risk of
developing it. Hereditary or genetic breast cancer
accounts for approximately 5 to 10 percent of all
breast cancers diagnosed. If you are identified to
have a genetic predisposition to cancer, it may
significantly affect your health care decisions.
The High Risk Breast Cancer Program at Nyack
Hospital can help you determine your risk of
developing breast cancer, especially if someone
in your family has been diagnosed with it.
Our Risk Assessment Coordinator/Advanced
Practice Registered Nurse can help guide
you through the process with one-to-one
consultations and provide you with information
and guidance to help you make informed
decisions about your health.
The High Risk Cancer Program
is a comprehensive program for
women at increased risk of
developing breast cancer.
Who is At Risk?
If you or a family member has a history
of breast or ovarian cancer, the following
guidelines can help you determine if you
should consider an assessment:
 History of breast biopsy showing atypical
hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma in-situ (LCIS)
 Breast cancer before age 50
 Ovarian cancer at any age
 Bilateral breast cancer at any age
 Both breast cancer and ovarian cancer at any
age in the same patient
 Male breast cancer at any age
 Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry with breast or
ovarian cancer at any age
 A previously identified BRCA mutation
 Two or more breast cancers, one under age 50
 Pancreatic cancer and breast or ovarian cancer
in the same person on the same side of
the family
Genetic Counseling and Testing
Although most breast cancers occur in women
who do not have a family history of breast
cancer, researchers have identified several genes
that increase a person’s risk of developing breast
and ovarian cancer. These breast-ovarian
predisposition genes, known as BRCA genes, can
be inherited from the mother’s or father’s side.
Based on your family history of cancer, the
option of genetic counseling and testing will
be provided. You will meet with our High Risk
Coordinator to discuss your family history of
cancer, to learn about hereditary breast cancer,
and to discuss whether or not genetic testing
is indicated.

Risk Assessment
Upon enrollment in the program, you will be
asked to complete a detailed questionnaire
containing questions about your family history
and prior medical history.* You may enter the
high risk program and have your risk assessed if
you come to The Breast Center for your annual
Screening mammograms. The information you
provide will be reviewed by our risk assessment
team to determine if you are at increased risk
for developing breast cancer. Our breast care
team is comprised of breast surgeons, breast
imagers, pathologists, medical and radiation
oncologists, nurse practitioners, physician
assistants and medical geneticist.
If you are determined to be at increased risk for
breast cancer, you will meet with a member of
our risk assessment team to help you understand
how various factors influence your risk and to
discuss your options for screening and prevention.
If needed, you will receive a breast exam by a
breast specialist.
*All family and medical history information
is privileged and confidential and will not
be released without the written consent of
the patient.
