The understanding of peace in TWO religious tradition Principal teachings about peace in TWO religious traditions How do TWO religious traditions guide individuals to achieve inner peace How do TWO religious traditions guide adherents to achieve world peace? 2 “Peace is not something you wish for, it is something you make, something you are, something you do, and something you give away”. – Robert Fulghum To what extent does this statement reflect the distinctive response of TWO religious traditions to the issue of peace? 3 CHRISTIANITY 4 Only write about NEW TESTAMENT. ( NO OLD TESTAMENT) New Testament contains: - 4 gospels, letters of Paul and books of revelation. Gospels refer to Jesus teachings/parables – what he did and said to people. o What did Jesus do? • He died on the cross to save humanity • Taught to turn the other cheek – seen in the story of the Centurion • Taught how to be at peace in his sermons. E.g. Sermon on the Mount – beatitudes “Blessed are the peacemakers” 5 Parables – Prodigal Son or Good Samaritan – Jesus told story of how to be at peace through forgiving peoples sins, being good and helping others. The word peace is mentioned many times in the Bible. Jesus is called ‘prince of peace’ 6 Must mention what Jesus said and did – evidence of this comes from the sacred texts – give quotes! Examples of Jesus teaching about forgiveness, love, service and justice. Jesus showed people the example. Conflict and Just War Theory – teachings today have changed to be back to the teachings of Jesus. Jesus said to forgive other people and not fight. Just War theory – Christians don’t use that anymore. 7 Jesus taught “love thy enemies and pray for those who persecute you” Jesus taught “love thy God and thy neighbour” – God and fellowman. 8 Give examples Paul: Conversion from Saul to Paul, a missionary o He equated peace with love of God and love of fellow people o Use his letters – seen in your booklet ( from the bible) o Corinthians “ love is not boastful....love is patient, love is kind” o Prayer- Jesus teachers the Lords Prayer Forgiveness – Jesus teaches to forgive in the Parable the prodigal son 9 Write about the Gospel of John – good passage describing Jesus walking back in after he has been resurrected saying “I leave you peace, my peace I give you” meaning it is not peace of this world, but of inner peace.
