Cornell Hillel Student Executive Board 2017 Candidates
Listed in the order that the election will be conducted
President
Brandon Cohen (bsc77)
 Leading the Jewish community on campus by uniting jewish student leaders from different
organizations. Connect Cornell Hillel with organizations on Campus such as MECA, APO, Greek
Organizations, CRU, and other influential groups on campus
 Work with the board of trustees and the student board to ensure that student voices are being
heard.
 Engage new students while encouraging student leaders to become more active
Danielle Eiger (dre38)
 I intend to reach out to students involved in Hillel and find out what it is that they would like to
expand on and what it is that they would like to be changed. Hillel is designed for students and
should represent what students will find meaningful and enjoyable. Along with this, I would like
to work with the Vice President to enhance the Jewish Student Leadership experience
 I plan to create open lines of communication between the student executive board and different
subsets of the Jewish community as well. There are many students who would like to express
their Judaism at Cornell but are uncomfortable with what there currently is to offer, and I intend
to talk to them to provide them with the outlets that would make them feel more comfortable
 I am excited to use the knowledge and skills I have gathered from my two terms on the student
board and every semester at Cornell in a Hillel leadership capacity to help the rest of the student
board make their ideas into amazing programs and initiatives
Executive Vice President
Lael Franco (lf296)
 Help to create programming and events that promote Jewish values and traditions, while
remaining fun and inclusive
 Be a supportive entity and a non-judgmental sounding board for the rest of the executive board
and the entire Hillel community
 Maintain the utmost dedication to the Hillel community
Chair of Major Speaker Series
Molly Pushner (map375)
 After two semesters on the Major Speakers Series Committee, I would enjoy the opportunity to
lead the committee as well as to be a leader in the greater Hillel community.
 For the committee, I want to continue to bring a diverse group of speakers to Cornell that engages
the larger Cornell community in addition to the Hillel community.
 My speaker ideas include Aly Raisman, an Olympic gold medalist, Shana Knizhnik and Irin
Carmon, the authors of Notorious RBG, and Tracee Ellis Roth, actress on the show Blackish.
Chair of Engagement
Sarah Kaminsky (sek235)
 My basis for running for Chair of Engagement is to encourage those that might not have been
involved with Jewish life to connect to their Judaism through Hillel’s engagement programs, and
hopefully inspire those who might not be connected to their Jewish heritage to now find a
connection to our community


I have the skills necessary to plan large scale engagement events that appeal to the larger
community through my experience as Freshmen Engagement Chair, and as a member of the
Hillel Orientation Team
I have many ideas to improve large scale events, such as changing venues to make the scene of
the events match the intent, having more upperclassmen events to instill a sense of community,
and bringing back past successful events like Jews Cruise to encourage retention of students
participating in Hillel
Ashley Radparvar (aar98)
 My main goal is to make sure that every student feels welcomed and engaged in the Jewish
community at Cornell by managing fun and social events, incorporating Jewish content, and
creating a welcoming space for all Jewish students
 Traditional events will be maintained and new events will be created that encourage students
from all graduating classes to participate (like Museum Nights, and more Big Little Bonding
events and Study Breaks etc)
 Events will be fun, social and appealing to all Jewish students at Cornell
Chair of Freshmen Engagement
Brooke Greenstein (bdg74)
 Creating programs with meaningful intentions
 Having more social/mixer type programs at the beginning of the year for freshman to meet each
other
 Partnering and communicating with other committees to have programs with a wider variety of
themes
Rebecca Horowitz (rgh99)
 Freshman should form a community amongst themselves through programs on north campus
because they live, eat, and are experiencing the beginning of college together
 Freshman should form strong bonds with Jewish upperclassman who can guide them through
their first year at Cornell and introduce them to Jewish life on campus. This can be accomplished
through mentorship programs in which upperclassman are paired with underclassmen in the same
(or similar) major
 Freshman should be encouraged to be active leaders in the Jewish life at Cornell even though they
are new to it. This can be accomplished by creating more leadership positions that are not
overwhelming (perhaps positions with two co heads)
Zach Krauss (zk36)
 Judaism Your Way (there is no right way to be Jewish)
 The More the Merrier (events should be planned to appeal to the most people)
 Community Unity (the most important part of Judaism is that we feel like one big family)
Chair of Cultural Programming
Jeremy Marchuck (jm2266)
 Create more programs based around the Jewish holidays
 Promote dialogue with other religious groups on campus
 Increase attendance at Shabbat dinner through organized programs
Chair of Communications
Sasha Chanko (stc83)



Promote around campus Hillel’s Jewish values and make Hillel known as a resource for Jews
(and non-Jews!)
Work with other student groups on campus in a mutually beneficial way to gain more publicity on
campus
Maintain a strong social-media presence and encourage all Hillel members to promote events,
even those not on the PR committee
Chair of Israel Programming
Lev Akabas (la286)
 Create an Israel newsletter containing information on Israeli current events and student writing
about Israel, such as students’ stories and experiences from Birthright, for example
 Increase dialogue between disagreeing groups, providing people with new perspectives, by cohosting cultural events such as a Middle East Festival with other student organizations
 Invite professors to give talks on issues involving Israel, and continue to organize fun events that
highlight Israeli music, entertainment, food, and culture, such as Israeli Movie Nights
Toba Stern (tfs36)
 Engage with more students through fun social events centered around aspects of Israeli culture,
such as the food and music
 Provide information and educational resources to those students who want to learn more
 Engage with other campus groups to promote unity and appreciate our shared cultures
Chair of Finance
Erika Fulep (emf98)
 I am running for the Chair of Finance because, as a math and economics double major, I feel that
I have the knowledge and background to maximize the funds available to Hillel and allocate them
efficiently. The past 3 semesters I was on the Engagement and PR committees, and now that I
know how the events are planned, run, and advertised, I have a deep understanding of the type of
funding required. It will be my first and foremost priority to make sure all the events you know
and love are fully funded (and new ones too)!
 This past summer I was an intern at a financial advising office. During the internship I analyzed
a significant amount of data on financial accounts, and I worked closely with the investment team
to allocate consumers portfolios in the most effective way. This internship has provided me with
valuable insight into managing and allocating money, which will no doubt be invaluable for the
finance position
 My main goal as Chair of Finance would be to obtain as much funding as possible by fundraising
and contacting donors, and to efficiently allocate the funds that have been obtained. Additionally,
I would like to increase the budget by applying for additional funding so that Hillel can put on
even bigger and better events
Chair of Social Justice
Chanan Heisler (nah79)
 Create more consistent and organized volunteer opportunities for people to participate in through
Hillel
 Look into increasing the amount of Jewish programming with deeper substance and try to connect
those to the service we will do
 Create a program to incentivize people to be more involved with social justice programming
Josh Roth (jjr246)



More speakers and education workshops (about sexual assault, environmental concerns, mental
health, abusive relationships, poverty)
More food drives and book drives
More fundraising events (charity date auction, charity dodge ball, charity trivia)
Chair of Religious Life and Education
Emily Flyer (evf8)
 I will strive to expand and diversify Hillel programming to entice more students across campus
 I will work closely with other committees to create innovative programs to foster people’s
knowledge and enthusiasm about Judaism and the state of Israel
 I plan on working to establish educational seminars/discussions/workshops on Jewish ethics,
ritual, culture, learning Hebrew engagements, music, cooking, ceremonies, morality, meaning of
Jewish holidays, and our ties to Israel
