THE LEADING FINANCIAL
MARKETPLACE IN THE EURO
ZONE
With over 800,000 direct jobs and 400,000 indirect jobs,
France’s financial industry plays a central role in the
French economy. Finance accounts for a little over 4% of
French GDP. Four French banks feature in Europe’s top
10, including two of the top three: BNP Paribas (2nd) and
Crédit Agricole (3rd).
A GATEWAY TO EURO ZONE
INVESTMENTS
Euronext is the leading stock exchange in the euro
zone, accounting for 40% of the euro zone’s market
capitalization. The Paris financial marketplace is also the
European leader in equities and corporate bonds.
EUROPE’S SECOND HOME TO
FOREIGN FINANCE
The Paris financial marketplace attracts plenty of foreign
investors. More than 500 international businesses,
banks, insurers and financial firms operate in the French
capital, where they employ nearly 126,000 people. In all,
€90 billion are currently invested by foreign investors
in French financial assets. Moreover, with some ¥20
billion in bank deposits, Paris has become a hub for the
internationalization of the yuan.

A LEADER IN PRIVATE EQUITY
In 2015, France was the leading country in the euro zone
for the private equity, with €10 billion raised by 11,500
investment funds and invested in 1,645 companies (AFIC/
Grant Thornton). Companies supported by private equity
create over 60,000 jobs per year.
EASY ACCESS TO FINANCE FOR
SMES
Paris is outpacing all other European cities for raising
seed capital, and is ranked second for late-stage funding
and crowdfunding (European Digital City Index 2015). In
2014, France was the first country in continental Europe to
adopt a legal framework for crowdfunding (more than 100
active platforms in mid-2016).
EUROPE’S SECOND LARGEST
VENTURE CAPITAL HOTSPOT
With nearly €2 billion raised in 2015, France remained
second in the European venture capital market by
transaction numbers, after the United Kingdom but ahead
of Germany. (EY, France Venture Capital Survey, 2015)
ENTERNEXT: THE STOCK
EXCHANGE FOR SMES
A subsidiary of Euronext, EnterNext, specializes in SMEs.
In France, 530 SMEs are listed on EnterNext, with a
combined market capitalization of €78 billion. In 2015,
French SMEs and midsize companies raised a total of
€4.2 billion, and 26 new French SMEs were listed.

FOCUS ON TECHNOLOGY
SECURITIES
In recent years, technology securities have increasingly
grabbed the limelight. With 320 listed tech SMEs
and mid-size companies, and a combined market
capitalization of €41 billion, Euronext is the leading
technology stock exchange in continental Europe.
France was also the world’s second largest issuer of
green bonds in 2015.
SOLID PARTNERSHIP WITH
REGULATORS
The French Financial Market Authority (AMF) and
the French Prudential Supervisory Authority (ACPR)
promote direct relationships with stakeholders,
avoiding intermediaries, thereby making them very
responsive regulatory authorities. The average
approval time for certain transactions such as UCITS is
under 20 days.
FINTECHS AT THE FOREFRONT
OF FINANCIAL INNOVATION
France has more than 100 finance research
laboratories. More than 750 FinTechs have been
opened over the last four years in various fields,
including financing solutions, portfolio management,
financial analysis, risk management, digitization and
cyber security.
