THE RISE OF ISLAM MR. QUINN WORLD CULTURES ISLAM • A religion based on the teachings of the prophet Mohammed which stresses belief in one god (Allah), and a body of law written in the Qur'an. Followers are called Muslims. PROPHET MUHAMMAD • the founder of Islam, believed to be the last true prophet sent by God, wrote the Koran which were his revelations BEDOUIN • Arab nomads. They were organized into tribes and groups called clans. These clans provided security and support for a life made difficult by the extreme conditions of the desert. Their settlement is from where the Muslim Empire sprang. This was around the 600's AD and at the Arabian Peninsula. SUNNI • A branch of Islam whose members acknowledge the first four caliphs as the rightful successors of Muhammad SHI'ITE • A member of the branch of Islam that supports the descendants of Muhammad as his rightful successors QUR'AN • the sacred writings of Islam revealed by God to the prophet Muhammad during his life at Mecca and Medina MECCA • City in western Arabia; birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, and ritual center of the Islamic religion. CALIPH • A supreme political and religious leader in a Muslim government MOSQUE • A Muslim place of worship HIJAB • A head covering worn in public by some Muslim women. SHAHADAH • the first pillar of Islam is an affirmation of faith SALAT • 5 daily prayers ZAKAT • Alms for the Poor; give charity to the poor; form of collected tax SAWM • Fasting during Ramadan HAJJ • A pilgrimage to Mecca, performed as a duty by Muslims
