Dual Enrolled Through:Virginia Western Community College
Prerequisite(s):Students electing to take courses for dual enrollment credit must apply to Virginia Western
Community College and meet the required Virginia Placement Test (VPT) scores by July 1, 2017.
Program Description:The STEM-H IST curriculum involves hands-on classroom experiences and project-based
learning which are designed to better prepare students for the rapidly changing, technologically enhanced workforce
of the 21st Century. Course topics include IT career exploration, game design, programming, Photoshop, and
website design. Students also learn how to use various software programs and have opportunities to earn
certifications necessary for a successful career in a range of technology fields. See the course descriptions for more

BOTETOURT COUNTY STEM-H IST PROGRAM Course Descriptions
*SDV 101 Computer Fundamentals Orientation (2 college credits)
This course introduces students to a variety of real world careers in the information systems technology field, skills necessary to
achieve their academic goals and services offered at the community college as a dual enrolled student.
Multimedia Software
Explores technical fundamentals of creating multimedia projects with related hardware and software. Students will learn to
manage resources required for multimedia production and evaluation and techniques for selection of graphics and multimedia
software.
Web Design I
In Web Design I students learn to create websites using HTML and CSS coding.
Game Design I
Game Design I offer students the chance to learn the basics of coding, designing, and programming their own video games.
Intro to Computer Programming
Students engage in the study of computers and microprocessors and their programming language. Students use problem-solving
skills to design, program, and interface devices with computer systems.
Game Design II
Game Design II offers students a more in-depth look at creating games from idea conception, production, marketing and
trouble-shooting their product.
~Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office teaches students the applications of Microsoft Office 2013. Students have the opportunity to earn their MOS
Certifications in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.
