Corona Discharge Unit
Operating Principle
The discharge unit is based on the corona discharging principle
and consists of a mixing cell with two separate ionization heads
and a control unit. The control unit is used for parameter settings and function monitoring.
Based on the physical principle of corona discharge caused by
electrical fields, positive or negative ions are produced in the
so-called ionization heads according to the polarization of the
applied high voltage.
Corona Discharge Unit
The ionization heads produce positive and negative ions that
are transported in succession to the mixing cell in the flow of
compressed air connected to both of the ionization heads.
Introduction
Particles dispersed in aerosols are often highly charged due
to mechanical interactions between one another and with the
environment. These interactive forces can lead, for example,
to agglomeration or other interactions which can be observed
during particle size distribution characterization, sampling or
separation of particles. This is why any such charges should be
neutralized or, alternatively, the particles should have unipolar
charges in order to avoid such effects.
Working principle
The corona discharger principle means that both positive and
negative ions can be produced reproducibly and variably without the use of radioactive materials. With the Corona Discharge
Unit it is possible to adjust the charge conditions in aerosols by
using a defined supply of both positive and negative ions in a
specially designed mixing cell.
The special design of the mixing cell guarantees almost ideal
mixing conditions for highest charging/discharging efficiency.
Due to the charge exchange on the particle surfaces the particles become charged/discharged. The control unit provides
the high voltage and constant ionization current supplied to
the ionization heads.
The degree of neutralization can be optimized for the particular
application because both ion sources can be adjusted independently.
The Corona Discharge Unit can condition dust as well as other
aerosols by mixing it with positive and negative ions in a defined manner to obtain charge neutralization.
