The Boroondara Symphonic Band presents Graham Lloyd : A Life of Music
The Boroondara Symphonic Band has a long tradition of performing and
showcasing the music of Australian composers. In particular, their original
works for concert band. In recent years the band has presented the music
of Martin Rutherford, Mark B. Buys, Ralph Hultgren, Catherine ClarkeJones, Wang Zheng-Ting, Barry McKimm, Brian Hogg, Ryan Goodwin,
Warwick Cohen, George Dreyfus, Sean (Thorn) O’Boyle and Graham
Lloyd. In the case of George Dreyfus and Barry McKimm the band has
produced concerts that have exclusively featured their music. For George
the band presented his official 75th Birthday Concert and for Barry an
evening of his major works, including his programmatic and multimovement “Song of Swans” and his song cycle, for Soprano, Tenor,
Narrator and Band, entitled “Yellow, Yellow Sweet”.
And for this year - another special event – an evening of music composed
and arranged by Graham Lloyd!
After finishing high school as a fledgling violinist, Graham embarked on a
career in the military. Joining the Army as an apprentice musician, with no
strings attached, he was given a clarinet. Some thirty years later Graham
has risen to the rank of Major and is currently in the position of Officer
Commanding/Chief Instructor at the Defence Force School of Music. For
many of the intervening years he was the Director of Music for the RAAF.
Some of you might know him as the past President of ABODA (Victorian
Branch).
As a composer, plaudits for Graham’s music writing skills first came in the
early 1980s when he was studying at Knellar Hall (British Army School of
Music in London). Upon his graduation he was awarded the “Somerville
Prize” for best concert band arrangement. Later, in1988, he won the
Yahama Composer of the Year Award with his first published work for
concert band “Prelude to a Festival”. Since then he has had a number of
other pieces released commercially. Currently he has music published by
De Haske, Barnhouse and Muso’s Media. During his career, so far, he has
arranged and composed over 400 works for concert bands, brass bands and
orchestras. In 1999, he received formal academic recognition for his
composing talents when he successfully completed his Master’s Degree in
music composition at the University of Melbourne.
All of his music reflects his intimate knowledge of wind and percussion
instruments. His compositions are in the tradition of original and
distinctive repertoire for concert band and his mature writing style is both
rewarding for the performer and enjoyable for the listener. His original
compositions for wind band (and his arrangements) are in a variety of
styles and are infused with his love for music and his passion for the wind
band medium.
As a tribute to Graham, the Boroondara Symphonic Band, and their
conductor Colin Harris, have much pleasure in announcing the
presentation of their next concert “Graham Lloyd: A Life of Music”.
Please come along and join Graham in the audience at the MLC
Auditorium on Saturday 23 June @ 8pm. Tickets will be available at the
door or ring Trevor 0414 736 544.
The programme will include Graham’s original compositions “Fanfare for
Freedom”, “The Loaded Dog”, “Pilgrim’s Swing”, “Prelude to a Festival”
and a variety of his fine arrangements.
