North State Cancer League awards more than
$100,000 to cancer organizations
REDDING, CA – North State Cancer League recently awarded $105,000 in grants to five organizations and
projects.
NSCL, a 30-year- old organization, is a group of women who are committed to helping prevent cancer,
assist cancer patients and their families and to help fund research that will find cures for cancer. NSCL
primarily funds its grants through an annual gala in February.
The group recently announced these grants:
Wings of Angels - $20,000 to help children with cancer and their families who need to seek
treatment outside of Redding.
NSCL Cancer Patient Services Fund through Mercy Foundation North – $40,000 - this fund helps
cancer patients who need help with gas, food, housing and other basics while they are in cancer
treatment.
Camp Okizu - $10,000 – to help Shasta County children who have cancer and their families to
attend these special camps.
Lung Cancer Screening and Bronchoscope Program - $20,000 – this new program coordinated by
Mercy Medical Center Redding and funded through Mercy Foundation North allows smokers and former
smokers who meet specific requirements to get screened for early stages of lung cancer and other lung
diseases. This screening currently is not available in the north state.
Cancer Research Institute - $15,000 – to help fund the use of immunotherapy in the prevention
and treatment of cancer.
“We are thrilled to be able to substantially help efforts to fight cancer in this area,” said NSCL president
Lesley Patenaude. “Our sponsors and supporters made this possible and we want to thank everyone
who has helped contribute over the years. We’ve already started planning our gala for 2016 and we’re
recruiting more sponsors and members.”
The mission of North State Cancer League is to sponsor one special fundraising event each year to raise
money for cancer related causes and services with emphasis on services in the local community.
