Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio Position Description Position Title: Reports To: Prepared By: Effective: FLSA: Director of Marketing and Communications President/Chief Executive Officer Donna Jones Baker February 18, 2015 Exempt Managerial GENERAL DESCRIPTION Responsible for marketing, communications and key initiatives which enhances the visibility and accessibility of the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio by inspiring members of the community, public and private, to participate in and financially support the mission of the League. To accomplish this, the individual must develop, organize and successfully implement marketing/public relations strategies, participate in the coordination of Urban League special events, community outreach and collaborative activities that achieves specific short-term goals and builds toward aggressive long-term goals. MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES Communications/Public Relations/Marketing Directs and coordinates the Communication/PR/Marketing activities of the organization. This may include, when appropriate, the use and monitoring of volunteers, and/or professional consultants in these fields to accomplish activities such as but not limited to the following: Work with and staff Board “Committee” to develop and implement overall marketing strategy Ensure Urban League presence in digital and social media. Use analytics to gauge effectiveness and direction Develop articles on all aspects of the Urban League of Southwestern Ohio for print media Develop quarterly Newsletter Periodically develop the “State of Black Cincinnati” report or other organizational “Monographs” Development of Urban League Commercials (PSA) Creation & deployment of Volunteer “Faith Ambassadors” Establish on-going professional relationships with those in the field Coordinate community speaking engagements When appropriate, participate in and coordinate all TV and Radio appearances for the organization Develop and maintain both video & photo libraries to keep track of all media appropriately. Also develop an agency listing of approved photographs for all events. Develop agency-wide marketing/ public relations policy In consultation with the CEO, develop appropriate papers on key issues Serve as spokesperson for areas of responsibility when requested by the CEO Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Key Initiatives Position Description Page 2 Coordinate the tracking of donors” to the organization in cooperation with the Development Dept. and maintain an up-to-date listing for “Special Thanks” pages in Annual Report, the Gala and other usage Develop appropriate materials including: brochures, informational packets, cards, pins, etc. for any agency campaign such as community membership, corporate heritage membership and program related. Special Events Assistance Works in conjunction with the Development staff in the planning, creation and implementation of special events such as the Annual Meeting, the Gala and Evening of Faith, etc. Plans and coordinates agency involvement in collaborative community activities and events such as the Black Family Reunion, community forums and workshops, Open Houses, etc. Works closely with the Vice President of Development. Other Periodic Focus groups to track community need. Forums and workshops State of Black Cincinnati Research: to maintain demographics on African-American community, to write position papers, to develop standards, to track news articles on various subject matter relating to the African-American community. REQUIREMENTS Abilities, Knowledge and Skills Special Events & Marketing/PR Skills: Ability to develop guidelines for special events, marketing/public relations efforts, community outreach and to objectively evaluate these initiatives of the Urban League to ensure that they produce desired results. Ability to develop assessment and evaluate strategies and tools for the Urban League to determine success of marketing/public relations key initiatives and community outreach. Grant Writing and Contractual Skills: Ability to identify funding sources, write proposals, interpret and negotiate contracts and service agreements. Ability to read and understand financial data and reports. Results Orientation: Ability to perform with the highest integrity. Committed to carrying out the mission, objectives and goals of the organization. Ability to take ownership for one’s own results. Ability to plan, organize, make effective decisions and control the implementation of assigned services and programs for the best results. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to develop trust and work with a variety of people. Ability to collaborate and use a participative approach. Ability to communicate effectively with others orally and in writing. Computer Skills: Ability to utilize PC skills and software appropriate to non-profits. Utilize computer technology to benefit program operations and correctly interpret computer output. Work Experience Minimum of five (5) years of work/ management experience, preferably with experience in direct supervision and/or working with volunteer Minimum of one (1) year of experience working within a non-profit organization helpful Education Bachelor’s degree Business Administration, Marketing or other related fields required. Masters degree in one of the above disciplines desirable.
