1.1 How can I install a Huawei gateway?
To install a Huawei gateway:
Step 1 If your Internet service provider (ISP) provides network services through a digital subscriber
line (DSL) port, install a Huawei HG5xx or HG6xx series gateway (HG5xx and HG6xx for
short), as shown in Figure 1-1.
Figure 1-1 Connecting a HG5xx or HG6xx
Step 2 If your ISP provides network services through a local area network (LAN) port, install a
Huawei HG2xx series gateway (HG2xx for short) or a WS325 or WS880, as shown in Figure

1.4 My PC displays a message, indicating that the IP
address has been used by another PC. What can I do?
The cause is that another PC connected to the same gateway is using the same IP address as
yours. As a result, you cannot access the Internet.
Possible causes are as follows:


Your PC is using the default IP address of the gateway: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.3.1. All
PCs connected to the gateway cannot use the two IP addresses and can use an IP address
from the following ranges:
−
192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254
−
192.168.3.2 to 192.168.3.254
The IP address of another PC is changed to the same as yours.
In case of an IP address conflict, change your IP address as follows:
Step 1 Right-click My Network Places on the desktop, and select Properties, as shown in Figure

1.5 I forgot the password for logging in to the device. What
can I do?
Take WS235 for example, if you forget your user name or password; restore your gateway to
its default settings.
To restore the WS325 to its default settings:
2017-5-10

Use a sharp object (for example, a paperclip) to push and hold the Reset button for about
6 seconds, and then release it.

Log in to the WS325 web management page, choose Maintenance > Device. Click the
Reset tab page, then Restore Default Settings, as shown in Figure 1-24.

1.7 How can I use a Huawei LAN uplink gateway as a
switch?
A Huawei gateway integrates the functions of a switch.
Take WS235 for example, to use a Huawei gateway as a switch:
Step 1 Connect the front-end gateway to the uplink LAN port of the gateway serving as a switch and
your PC to the downlink LAN port

Step 2 Choose Basic > LAN. Click the DHCP tab page, and change the maintenance IP address of
the gateway serving as a switch, as shown in Figure 1-26.
Figure 1-26 Changing the maintenance IP address
Ensure that the new IP address does not conflict with the IP address of the front-end router (that is,
ensure that they are not in the same network segment).
The default IP address of a Huawei LAN uplink gateway is 192.168.3.1. If the IP address of the
front-end router is in the network segment 192.168.3.X, change it to a different one.
Step 3 Disable the DHCP function for the front-end gateway to allocate an IP address, as shown in
Figure 1-27.
If the DHCP function is not disabled, your PC cannot obtain correct network parameters, and
you cannot access the Internet.

1.8 After my PC is connected to a gateway, I can access the
Internet but cannot access My Network Places. What can I
do?
By default, a Huawei gateway allows PCs on a LAN to visit each other.
Common access failures to My Network Places and corresponding solutions are as follows:

No resource is shared or the sharing service is not enabled.
Symptom: PC A and B can be connected but cannot access the shared resources. When
you choose System tools > Local Users and Groups, a dialog box is displayed,
indicating that no server service is enabled.
To resolve this problem:

2.5 My ADSL modem cannot synchronize with the device
at the central office. What can I do?
Connect your ADSL modem to a telephone cable to determine whether your ADSL modem
synchronizes with the device at the central office:

If the ADSL indicator blinks for about 1 minutes and turns steady on, your ADSL
modem has synchronized with the broadband access server (BAS) of your ISP.

If the ADSL indicator keeps blinking, your ADSL modem fails to synchronize with the
BAS of your ISP.
To resolve this problem:
Step 1 Check that the cables and ADSL splitter are properly connected, as shown in Figure 2-21.

2.6 My ADSL modem goes offline frequently. What can I
do?
To resolve this problem:

If your ADSL modem works only as a bridge, check parameters, such as Line
Attenuation, SNR Margin, and Line Rate on the ADSL modem's web management
page.
If the value of SNR Margin is less than 10 dB (the normal range is 15–40 dB), the
ADSL line quality is poor. If these parameter values are abnormal, contact your local
ISP.
2017-5-10

If your ADSL modem's routing function is enabled, perform the following operations:
1.
Check that no viruses or address resolution protocol (ARP) spoofing exits on the LAN.

2.
Check that no PC on the LAN is downloading files using P2P software, such as Xunlei
or BitTorrent (BT), resulting in insufficient bandwidth resources.
3.
Check that your ADSL modem is not overloaded due to a large number of PCs on the
LAN.
4.
With comparison to a dedicated broadband gateway, an ADSL modem provides low
routing capability. You are advised not connect more than five PCs to the ADSL modem
when the routing function is enabled.
5.
Update the software of your ADSL modem to the latest version released at
http://www.huaweidevice.com.
2.7 My ADSL modem does not work properly and failed
to establish a dialup connection in bridging mode. What
can I do?
To resolve this problem:
Step 1 Check the status of the Power, LAN, and ADSL indicators.

If your ADSL modem initiation fails, the Power indicator is off. Check whether the
power adapter is compatible with your ADSL modem. If yes, your ADSL modem has
hardware faults.

If the LAN port is faulty or is incompatible with the network adapter interface, the LAN
indicator is off.

If your ADSL modem fails to synchronize with the BAS of your ISP, the ADSL indicator
keeps blinks.
Step 2 Check that the cables and ADSL splitter are properly connected.
Step 3 Contact your local ISP to check that your ADSL line is working properly.
Step 4 Update the software of your ADSL modem to the latest version released at
http://www.huaweidevice.com.
Step 5 If all indicators are normal, contact your local ISP to check that broadband access server
(BAS) is working properly.

2.9 What are the common PPPoE dialup error codes and
corresponding solutions?

Error 691: The connection fails because the entered user name or password is invalid.
Possible causes:
−
The entered user name or password is incorrect.
−
Your last dialup connection is accidentally disconnected. Your ISP's broadband
remote access server (BRAS) receives no information about the disconnection and
does not delete your service account from the online account list. As a result, the
BRAS considers that you are already online but still dialing.
−
Your service account is locked because it is in arrears or your broadband service has
expired.
−
The BRAS has invalidated your service account.
To resolve this problem:
2017-5-10
1.
Check that the spelling, uppercase, and lowercase of the entered user name and password
are correct.
2.
Wait for a few minutes or restart the modem, and try again.
3.

If the problem persists, power off and on your WS325, and try again.
2.12 What is ARP spoofing? How can I identity an ARP
spoofing attack?
ARP spoofing is a technique whereby an attacker changes the mapping between the media
access control (MAC) address and IP address and causes an Internet access failure. In
communication, data is forwarded based on the mapping between the MAC address and IP
address. If the mapping is incorrect, errors will occur, and the communication will be affected.
Symptom:

On a LAN, all users or users in a certain area are disconnected frequently. A user can
connect to the Internet by restarting the PC or other network devices (for example,
gateways), or disabling the network adapter. However, the fault persists.

The Internet access rate is unstable. However, when I test the access rate on a PC, the rate
is normal.

E-bank, online game, or QQ accounts are lost frequently.
To identify an ARP spoofing attack, take WS325 for example:
Step 1 Log in to the WS325 web management page, and choose Status > Device Information.

2.13 My gateway cannot work properly because other
users on the LAN often watch web TV or download files
using BT. What can I do?
P2P software, such as BT cannot be shielded because P2P software uses an unfixed port or
server. To resolve this problem, enable the required ports only. For example, to browse web
pages, enable ports 53 and 80. To receive and send emails, enable ports 25, 53, and 110.
2.14 I connect only two PCs to my gateway. However, the
Internet access rate is low. What can I do?
Check whether bandwidth-consuming communication, such as downloading files or watching
web TV, is ongoing on a PC. If yes, other communications will be affected.
To resolve this problem:
Step 1 Disconnect one PC. On the other PC, disable all communication and check that the Internet
access rate recovers.
Step 2 Check that your PCs are not virus-infected or attacked.
Step 3 Check that no bandwidth limit is set on the WS325.
If a small bandwidth limit is set, the access rate is low. Clear all settings on your gateway, and
try again.
----End
2.15 A PC can access the Internet but another PC fail to do
so. What can I do?
If a PC can access the Internet, your gateway is working properly. On the PC that cannot
access the Internet, check that the specified IP settings, such as the fixed IP address, gateway
IP address, and DNS address are correct, or have your gateway automatically allocate an IP
address and a DNS address to the PC.

Take WS325 for example: Other PCs can display web pages. This indicates that the WS325 is
working properly. This PC cannot display web pages because:

2017-5-10
The fixed IP address, default gateway IP address, or DNS address is incorrect or not set,
as shown in Figure 2-45.

This PC is virus-infected.

Hardware, such as the network adapter or network cable is faulty.
2.17 After I connect my PC to the device, the MSN fails to
set up a video call, but other applications are normal.
What can I do?
Take WS325 for example, to resolve this problem, enable the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)
function on the WS325. Log in to the WS325 web management page, and choose
Advanced > UpnP. Click the UPnP tab page, and select Enable, as shown in Figure 2-48.
Figure 2-48 Enabling the UPnP function
2.18 The Internet access rate becomes low after I connect
my PC to the device. What can I do?
Take WS325 for example, to resolve this problem:
Step 1 Check that the broadband bandwidth is sufficient.
If the bandwidth is 1 Mbit/s, the Internet access rate is low when two or more users access the
Internet at the same time and one of them watches online videos or downloads files using
Xunlei, BPS, FlashGet, eMule, or QQDownload.
Step 2 Check that no bandwidth limit is set on the WS325.
2017-5-10
Error! Unknown document property name..
FAQs on Access Products V1.0
Confidentiality
If a small bandwidth limit is set, the access rate is low. Clear all settings on the WS325, and
try again.
Step 3 Check that no PC on the LAN is infected by viruses (for example, worms).
If a PC is virus-infected, install antivirus software on the PC and update it to the latest version.
Scan the entire system and kill the viruses. To improve system security and reliability, update
and install patches periodically, uninstall unnecessary services, and disable unnecessary ports.
Step 4 Check that the network cable is correctly connected.
Connect only one PC to your modem, and check whether the Internet access rate is normal. If
no, the network cable may be faulty.
Step 5 Check that your PC's system drive has sufficient available space (for example, check that the
CPU usage is low).
The available space is insufficient probably because that you have loaded too many
applications. To improve the Internet access rate, load only necessary software or delete
unnecessary files. An application with high CPU usage affects the Internet access rate and PC
running speed.
Step 6 Check that the network is normal.
Check that the server of the destination website has sufficient bandwidth or does not overload.
Wait for a while, and try again.
Step 7 Check that your PC does not run for a long time.
If your PC has been running for a long time, restart it, and try again.
Step 8 Check that you have installed only one firewall.
If you have installed more than one firewall, uninstall unnecessary firewalls.
----End
2.19 Why can I use QQ but cannot display any web page?
The normal use of QQ indicates that your gateway is working properly. Web pages cannot be
displayed probably because:

The DNS address is incorrect.
For example, the DNS address is set to 192.168.3.1 (default IP address of a gateway). As
a result, the DNS cannot resolve certain websites' domain names, and you cannot visit
these websites. To resolve this problem, specify a correct DNS address provided by your
ISP as follows:
2017-5-10
Step 1
Right-click My Network Places on the desktop, and select Properties.
Step 2
In the displayed window, right-click Local Area Connection, and select Properties.
Step 3
Click the General tab page, and double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

The MTU value is incorrect.
The default MTU value of a Huawei gateway is 1500 when Connection type is set to
static IP or DHCP and 1492 when set to PPPoE, as shown in Figure 2-50.

2.23 How often does the DHCP server clear the customer
information list?
Take WS325 for example:
The interval at which the DHCP server automatically clears the customer information list
equals to the DHCP's expiration duration (that is, the lease duration of the DHCP server). For
example, if the lease duration is 1 day (default duration on the gateway), the DHCP server
clears the customer information list once every day even if your PC is powered off or another
IP address is specified.
To view the lease duration of the DHCP server:
Log in to the WS325 web management page, and choose Basic > LAN. Click the DHCP

3.14 What are the factors that affect the wireless signal
transmission? How can I improve the signal transmission
quality in the existing network environment?
Factors that can affect the wireless signal transmission are:

The walls in a crowed home are the major obstacles that affect the wireless signal
transmission. A WLAN uses the microwave frequency band, which propagates
rectilinearly and cannot diffract around obstacles. If you place a wireless receiver behind
an obstacle, the receiver receives weak signal or no signal.

A physical obstacle blocks the microwave signal and absorbs electromagnetic energy.
Therefore, a floor of reinforced concrete is the major metal obstacle that affects the
wireless signal transmission in a home. The signal cannot penetrate such a floor.

The IEEE 802.11b/g standard defines a 2.4 GHz frequency band for WLAN
communication. However, many devices, such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices,
cordless phones, and refrigerators also operate at this frequency. If you place a wireless
device near to such a device, they will generate a strong magnetic field, which severely
interferes with your WLAN.

Channel conflicts or signal crosstalk may occur when multiple wireless devices are
deployed on your WLAN.

Interference sources, such as radio towers, welding machines, trams or high-voltage
power transformers may strongly interfere with the wireless signal if you place the
wireless device or cable 100 meters around such an interference source.

The weather may affect outdoor wireless signal transmission. The signal attenuates
seriously on a thunder-stormy or cloudy day but propagate farther on a sunny day.
Measures that can improve the signal transmission quality:
2017-5-10

Install your wireless AP in a higher position to reduce obstacles and signal coverage
holes, or in a position where the signals penetrate as few walls as possible. The AP is

3.15 How can I encrypt my WLAN? Which security modes
are supported by a Huawei gateway?
Take WS325 for example:
Encrypt your WLAN to prevent unauthorized use of your network resources. A Huawei
gateway supports five security modes: Open, WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, and
WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. If you are not familiar with security modes, encrypt your WLAN
using WPA2-PSK.
To encrypt your WLAN:
Step 1 Log in to the WS325 web management page, and choose Basic > WLAN.
Step 2 Click the WLAN tab page, set Security to Open, WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, or
WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, enter a password in WPA pre-shared key, and set WPA
encryption to AES and WPS mode to PBC (both are default values), as shown in Figure

3.16 My wireless network adapter supporting IEEE 802.11n
provides a connection rate less than 100 Mbit/s after
connecting to the device. What can I do?
Possible causes and corresponding solutions are as follows, take WS325 for example:

The connection rate varies with security modes, and your WS325's WPA security mode
is improperly set.
Change WPA encryption to AES, as shown in Figure 3-35.

Interferences are strong.
−
Channel conflicts or signal crosstalk may occur when multiple wireless devices are
deployed on your WLAN.
Change your WLAN's signal transmission channel and SSID.
−
The wireless signal is blocked by physical obstacles and become weak.
Place your wireless AP to an optimal position.
−
The IEEE 802.11b/g standard defines a 2.4 GHz frequency band for WLAN
communication. However, many devices, such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth
devices, cordless phones, and refrigerators also operate at this frequency. If you place
a wireless device near to such a device, they will generate a strong magnetic field,
which severely interferes with your WLAN.
To reduce interference and ensure smooth signal transmission, keep your wireless AP
far away from household appliances.
−
The drive of your wireless network adapter is not updated.
Update it to the latest version.

3.19 What is the MAC address clone function used for?
Take WS325 for example:
The MAC address clone function is to copy a PC's MAC address to a gateway's WAN port to
overwrite the original MAC address of the WAN port. The purpose is to spoof certain servers
and remove security measures of ISPs. For example, Topway, China TieTong, or a residential
broadband operator associates your dialup connection account or static IP address with the
MAC address of your PC when authorizing broadband access services. Only the associated
PC can establish a dialup connection to the Internet without a gateway. To allow multiple PCs
to access the Internet using the WS325, log in to the WS325 web management page from the

4.2 What is a DMZ host? What is a DMZ host used for?
A DMZ host is a host on the internal network that has all ports exposed, except those ports
otherwise forwarded. The purpose of a DMZ is to add an additional security layer to an
organization's LAN, thereby resolving the problem that internal servers cannot be accessed
from an external network after a firewall is installed.
You can configure a DMZ host when:

You cannot access the mapped port remotely.

You do not know the port number for communicating with certain application servers or
special software (for example, IP cameras and database software) and cannot perform
port mapping.

You cannot perform certain operations on online games. For example, you can start a
game but cannot set up a game team.

You cannot open certain web pages or perform certain operations on an opened web page.
For example, you cannot transfer the account balance or enter a verification code on an
E-bank.
Take WS325 for example, to configure a DMZ host for a WAN connection, specify Host
address (the IP address of the PC to be configured as a DMZ host), enable DMZ, and click
Submit, as shown in Figure 4-6.

4.4 What is port mapping (virtual server configuration)?
How can I set a port mapping rule?
Generally, a broadband gateway integrates a firewall, which blocks the access of PCs on a
WAN to certain servers on a LAN. The WAN port of a gateway can be mapped to the server
on a LAN so that the server can be accessed by PCs on a WAN.
To set a port mapping rule, take WS325 for example:
Select a mode from the Application drop-down list box, set parameters, such as Protocol,
External start port, External end port, Mapping name, and Internal port (for example,
192.168.3.2), and click Submit, as shown in Figure 4-9.

4.5 How can I set a bandwidth control rule (manage
traffic)?
Bandwidth control allows you to set a limit or rule to properly allocate and control bandwidth
in the case of limited bandwidth resources.
You can set a bandwidth control rule when:

Multiple PCs access the Internet using the same bandwidth.

A PC's download and upload rates must be specified.
To set bandwidth control, take WS325 for example:
Step 1 Log in to the WS325 web management page, and choose Advanced > IP QoS.
Step 2 Specify the total download and upload bandwidth you want to apply for, select a traffic
management type, and click Apply, as shown in Figure 4-10.

4.7 An internal server cannot be accessed from an external
network after a virtual server is set. What can I do?
Take WS325 for example, to resolve this problem:
Step 1 Check that the required ports are properly mapped to the internal server. That is, check that
the IP address set for the forwarding rule is the IP address of the internal server.
Step 2 Access the internal server from another internal PC to check that the server is powered on and
can be accessed.
Step 3 Check that all required ports are mapped to the internal server.
The access may fail because certain ports are not mapped.
You can enable the DMZ host to check whether the internal server can be accessed. If yes,
certain ports are not mapped. If you do not know the port for communicating with IP cameras
or special applications, check whether the DMZ host can work properly. If yes, contact your
software supplier.
Step 4 Check whether the firewall installed on the WS325 filters the communication ports of your
server. If yes, disable the firewall temporarily.
Step 5 Disable the firewall installed on the internal server.
The firewall may block the PCs from a non-trusted area from accessing the internal server.
Step 6 Check whether the internal server is the web server providing port 80. If yes, change your
gateway's remote management port to another port to prevent conflicts.
Step 7 Access the virtual server from an external network to check that the virtual server is
successfully mapped. Do not access the virtual server from the internal network using the IP
address of the WAN port. Although you can access the virtual server from the internal
network, you cannot do so from an external network.
Step 8 Connect a PC to the WAN port of your gateway to check that your ISP has not shielded
related ports.
If the PC can access the internal server but cannot access the Internet, the internal server may
shield related ports, and the virtual server cannot be accessed. (As required by the Ministry of

4.8 Does a Huawei Gateway support the UPnP? What is
UPnP?
The UPnP is an architecture that allows device-to-device networking of personal PCs,
intelligent equipment (or instruments), and household appliances. It is based on established
standards, such as the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP), HTTP, and XML. An UPnP
compatible device can dynamically connect to a network and cooperate with other devices. In
this way, more people can access networks especially a home network. All Huawei gateways
support the UPnP.
4.9 How can I enable the UPnP in the OS after enabling
the UPnP on the gateway?
To use the UPnP, install an OS on your PC, such as Windows Me or Windows XP.
To install the UPnP on your PC running Windows XP:
Step 1 Choose Start > Control Panel on the desktop.
Step 2 Click Add or delete programs, then Add or delete Windows components.
Step 3 Select Networking Services, and click Details.
Step 4 Select UPnP User Interface, and click OK.
Step 5 Click Next.
----End
In this process, you may need to insert the CD-ROM of the Windows XP. If your PC runs
Windows 98 or Windows 2000, download the DirectX 9.0 from the official website of
Microsoft and install it.
4.10 The domain name filtering rule I set does not take
effect. What can I do?
Your PC saves domain names and IP addresses of the websites that you have visited. After
you set a domain name filtering rule, these domain names and IP addresses of the websites
can stilled be accessed.
To resolve this problem, delete all Internet Explorer cookies, and restart your PC as follows:

Step 4 Check that the internal server's communication ports are not filtered by the firewall installed
on your gateway.
Step 5 Disable the firewall installed on the internal server.
The firewall may block the PCs from a non-trusted area from accessing the internal server.
Step 6 Check that the internal server is not a special application server, for example, an FTP server
or VoIP server.
Only application layer gateways (ALGs) can support a special server. Currently, a Huawei
gateway supports only the H.323 VoIP standard, and do not support the SIP or MGCP. Two
connections must be set when the FTP is used to transmit data: control connection and data
connection. If the default port 21 for control connection is changed, the gateway cannot
identify the FTP service, and data connection fails.
Step 7 Connect a PC to the WAN port of your gateway to check that your ISP has not shielded
related ports.
If the PC can access the internal server but cannot access the Internet, the internal server may
shield related ports, and the virtual server cannot be accessed.
Do not change port 80 of a web server on the WS325 web management page.
Access the virtual server from an external network to check that the virtual server is successfully
mapped. Do not access the virtual server from the LAN using the IP address of the WAN port. Although
you can access the virtual server from the internal network, you cannot do so from an external network.
If you do not know the port for communicating with special servers, such as IP cameras or special
applications, check that the DMZ host is working properly. If the problem persists, contact your software

4.12 Why cannot I establish a dialup connection after I
power off and on my gateway?
The possible cause is that the front-end server does not identify your disconnection and your
PC remains in the online state. To resolve this problem, wait a few minutes (generally about 3
to 5 minutes), and try again.
4.13 How can I set a wireless distribution system?
A wireless distribution system (WDS) enables two gateways to interconnect wirelessly to
increase the coverage range of a WLAN.
Take WS325 for example, to set a WDS:
Step 1 Log in to the WS325 web management page, and choose Basic > WLAN.
Step 2 Click the WLAN WDS tab page, select the SSID for which the WDS is to be enabled, enter
the MAC address of the interconnected gateway, and click Submit, as shown in Figure 4-15.
Figure 4-15 Setting a WDS
The WDS technology is immature, and the gateway specifications vary with vendors. Therefore, Two
gateways, especially two from different vendors, are difficult to interconnect. To resolve this problem,
use gateways from the same vendor.
Note the following items when you use a WDS:

The two gateways to be interconnected support and have enabled the WDS.

Settings of the following items must be the same on the two gateways to be
interconnected:

