• An autopsy is an internal and external
examination of the body to determine the cause
of death.
• Forensic autopsies are done to solve crimes
• Clinical autopsies are done to understand
diseases

protection (includes skin, hair and nails)

• Cardiovascular System – Transport fluids, gases,
and nutrients around the body (heart, blood

• Hippa is the law that mandates the
confidentiality of personal health information
and any other identification information.
• Everyone who has access to health care is
required to follow this law
• The only time health information can be given
out is with permission from the patient, public
safety, or when law enforcement is involved.

of manner of death?
• Crime Scene Investigators – collect and
analyze evidence
• Forensic Pathologists/Medical Examiners –
Conduct autopsies
– Medical Examiners – Appointed specialists mainly
in highly populated areas
– Coroners – voted officials that may have a MD in
more rural areas
• DNA analysts – Determine source of blood
• Toxicologists – Analyze blood and fluids for
chemicals
