AP World History The Muslim Empires KHS 2013-‐14 Autopsy of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal Empires Chapter 21 (Stearns): the Muslim Empires The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, 1632 by Rembrandt, depicts an autopsy An autopsy, also known as a post-‐mortem examination, necropsy, or obduuction, is a medical or historical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse [or an AP World History Chapter 21 empire] to determine the cause and manner of death and to evaluate any disease, injury, political, economic, military or social ills that may be present. A specialized medical doctor, called a pathologist; [or an AP World History student] usually performs the autopsy. Autopsies are either performed for legal, medical, or historical purposes. A forensic autopsy is carried out when the cause of death my be a criminal matter, while a clinical or academic autopsy is performed to find the medical cause of death and is used in cases of unknown or uncertain death, or for research purposes – particularly for historical ones. Autopsies can be further classified into cases where external examination suffices, and those where the body is dissected and an internal examination is conducted. Permission from next of kin may be required for internal autopsy in some cases. Once an internal autopsy is complete, the body is reconstituted by sewing it back together. The prefix “auto” means ‘self’, and so autopsy means ‘to see for oneself’; it is used more broadly as an examination of an object. Specifically, it means the post-‐mortem examination of a human corpse. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Internal Memo: Autopsy Division TO: Student Interns, Pathology Department, Tracy Police Headquarters FROM: Medical Examiner, San Joaquin County RE: Autopsies ordered It has come to my attention that 3 suspicious deaths have occurred recently under your jurisdiction: Sir Ottoman, Captain Safavid, and Madame Mughal all collapsed and died. It does not seem that they died a natural death of old age. I would like you to investigate* these deaths and report back to me via a memo the results of your investigation. Please use the attached form. * You will need to use your textbook and other relevant sources. Online sources are fine. Be sure to select valid sources (NO blogs, No Wikipedia, etc.). Apply what you’ve learned about validating Internet sources. All sources must be cited in APA style at the end of the autopsy report.
