Norfolk-October 1, 2014 – Race for a world without breast cancer at the 14th Annual Susan G.
Komen Tidewater Race for the Cure® on Saturday morning, October 11th, along the Virginia
Beach Oceanfront. The Komen Tidewater Race raises funds for the local fight against breast
cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with the
disease. The Komen Race for the Cure series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the
world. Thanks to strong support in the community, the Komen Tidewater Race for the Cure Race
is the largest in Virginia.
Individual adult registration is $35 for the 5K run/walk. Those who can’t attend on Race day can
support the effort by registering to Sleep In for the Cure®.
75% percent of the net funds raised by Komen Tidewater stays in the community to fund lifesaving, local breast health screening, diagnostics, treatment support education programs for those
who may not otherwise have access. The remaining 25% raised funds global breast cancer
research, including research being done in Virginia.
The Race is Komen Tidewater’s signature fundraising event. Since 1999, Komen Tidewater has
invested more than $4.4 million in the fight against breast cancer, awarding these dollars through
grants to local organizations that deliver breast health services in the Tidewater service area.
Komen Tidewater has contributed nearly $1 million to Susan G. Komen® for global breast cancer
research since 1999. “Our fundraising efforts have made it possible to continue our quest to save
lives and end breast cancer forever through community outreach, advocacy, global programs and
research. Thanks to Your commitment, we can continue fighting this disease right here in our
community and across the globe,” said Sharon Laderberg, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen
Tidewater Affiliate. “Our mission is not yet complete; however we are making great strides in the
fight to end Breast Cancer”.
