Beatson Cancer Charity Beatson Cancer Charity supports and enhances the treatment, care and wellbeing of current, former and future cancer patients and their families, in particular Beatson patients, working in partnership with the NHS, the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and related facilities. Supporting Beatson Cancer Charity offers the wider community a unique opportunity to contribute to the fight against cancer in the broadest possible sense. Without fundraising and the amazing kindness and generosity of our supporters none of our charitable activity could take place. Fundraising and Communications Without our fundraising and communications activity none of our charitable activity would take place as we are completely reliant on the funds we raise to fund charitable activity. Having a high public profile is a significant factor in driving our fundraising forward. Many current and former patients and their families, friends and colleagues see their involvement in our fundraising and communications activity as part of their cancer journey and our fundraising and communications teams play a key role in supporting them with this. Patient and Family Support Patient and Family Support comprises a comprehensive range of wellbeing and specialist services including complementary therapy’s, specialist health and work support and specialist activities delivered by charity staff and volunteers through our unique and award-winning Wellbeing Centre and throughout the Beatson and at related facilities. Funding The funding we provide comprises financial awards to various individuals and institutions involved in the care and investigation of cancer, including the NHS, in line with the charity’s funding policy in the furtherance of its objectives. The key areas of funding are: specialist staff resources, innovative service developments, enhanced medical equipment, novel research projects and educational staff development Patient and Family Support Beatson Cancer Charity staff and volunteers provide a wide range of patient and family support free of charge to all patients within the Beatson and at an increasing number of related facilities where cancer patients are treated including at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the New Victoria Hospital and Lanarkshire Beatson. Wellbeing The Beatson Cancer Charity Wellbeing Centre on Level 4 of the Beatson is open from 0900 until 2100 seven days a week providing a unique space where patients can relax away from the clinical environment and enjoy the stunning views. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and fresh fruit smoothies are available for patients and their families as well as reading materials and board games. Wi-Fi, desktop computers and iPads are available as well as a cinema that can be used to watch DVD’s or satellite television including major sporting events. We also provide a catering service and reading materials for day patients and out patients attending clinics throughout the cancer centre and at many related facilities. The Wellbeing Centre holds a stock of basic clothing items that are available on request for patients when required. Beatson Cancer Charity staff and volunteers also manage a Welcome Desk at the main entrance to the Beatson and accompany patients throughout the cancer centre helping to relieve some of their anxiety. Complementary Therapies There are three treatment rooms in the Wellbeing Centre on Level 4 of the Beatson Cancer Centre where a range of complementary therapies are on offer primarily to patients but also to family members and NHS staff including reflexology, massage, reiki, relaxation, manicure, pedicure and holistic facials. A range of self-help breathing, relaxation and distraction techniques are available to boost confidence, self-esteem and to assist patients with anxiety. Complementary Therapies are also available in the In Patient Wards, the Chemotherapy Day Unit, the Radiotherapy Department and at an increasing number of related facilities including in enhanced treatment rooms at Ward 4B1 in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and at Lanarkshire Beatson as well as Clinic P at the New Victoria Hospital. Hairdressing A hairdressing salon in the Wellbeing Centre is open from 0900 until 1700 Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings. Our hairdressers are fully experienced in dealing with the very sensitive nature of hair loss and work very closely with NHS colleagues to make sure each patient receives the best possible treatment. They cut, style, set, blow dry, carry out head shaves and give advice and information on hair care during treatment. All of our hairdressers are trained in Headstrong scarf tying techniques that they are happy to pass on to patients. Podiatry We provide podiatry treatments for patients in the Wellbeing Centre, throughout the Beatson and at related facilities. Activities We provide a range of activities for patients and their families from supporting special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings to musical events and simply encouraging patients to socialise and take part in gentle exercise or activity. Specialist Health and Work Service Specialist staff support and engage with patients in continuing their work during treatment and returning to work post treatment as well as supporting healthcare professionals to assist patients with work related issues. This is a unique and innovative service for people with a cancer diagnosis and their families/carers who are experiencing work related difficulties. It provides access to specialist staff that are registered health professionals with specific experience in relevant areas including disability management and the Equality Act. The specialist staff are skilled in negotiation in relation to employment situations and advocate on behalf of patient’s rights and health care needs in relation to their employment. Title: Reporting to: Salary: Patient and Family Support Coordinator Patient and Family Support Manager Dependent on experience Full time permanent post, 35 hours per week, 35 days annual leave and 5% of salary as pension contribution. Although core hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm flexible working will be required including evenings and weekends to meet the demands of service requirements. The purpose of this role is to coordinate the day to day Patient and Family Support function and assistants working in and from the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre (BWoSCC). You will contribute to the operational and strategic development of our Patient and Family Support services Part of this role will be directly involved in the provision of support to patients, family members and staff in the wellbeing centre and wards. You should have relevant experience of managing a team and of providing care within an NHS environment. Responsibilities The delivery of Patient and Family Support in the BWoSCC and related facilities when required. Line management of Patient and Family Support Assistants. Working with your colleagues to ensure collaboration across the team. Proactively engage with staff, families and patients to encourage use of Patient and Family Support services available at all locations. Maintaining exceptional quality service provision and standards of care. To ensure all patients, family and staff receive an excellent standard of care. Support the Patient and Family Support Manager to ensure the appropriate level of staff and resources are in place at all times to deliver services effectively. Build relationships across all locations with NHS staff and other partners and stakeholders to promote and develop the integration of our services. To develop a dynamic and successful team. To assist with recruitment and training of Patient and Family Support staff and volunteers. To advise and support the Patient and Family Support Manager. To assist with the development and implementation of the strategy. Ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to. To attend events and give presentations on behalf of the charity. To collect and provide statistics and reports for management purposes. To identify new opportunities for expansion and development. Point of contact for general queries. Any other duties as may be required by the Management team. To develop the awareness and perception of the charity whilst protecting its reputation. Essential Criteria Experience working with cancer patients. Relevant experience of managing a team and of providing care within an NHS environment. Hold a driving licence and have access to a car at all times for business use.
