Press release: Bare your breasts for cancer fight
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to encourage women to check their
breasts regularly for signs of cancer, registration is open for a special event to raise
awareness of how to check breasts effectively.
On Sunday 4 December, #CheckemOutLIVE will see hundreds of women bare their
chests for a live health check, with a Breast Specialist Consultant in Hull, which is
next year’s UK City of Culture.
There are 565 people diagnosed with cancer every week in Yorkshire, and statistics
show that people in Yorkshire are more likely to get cancer and more likely to die
from it, than most other counties in England. There are many reasons for this, but
one is that people sometimes leave it too late before being examined by a doctor.
Mindset specialist, Sheila Granger is organising the event. She says:
“Yorkshire Cancer Research aims to improve cancer outcomes by helping people
know the signs to look out for and seek advice earlier, so I wanted to invite ladies to
take part in a memorable event, to act as a lasting reminder to ensure women
regularly check their breasts for signs of change.”
“Following the success of Sea of Hull, which saw 3500 people get naked in the
streets, many people wished they had taken part and after talking to Yorkshire
Cancer Research, I thought what better way to make sure this becomes part of our
daily routine. We are inviting friends and family groups to come along to KC
Lightstream Stadium for an indoor event and #CheckemOutLIVE.”
“During the event, I will put the audience at ease and discuss how to feel proud of
their bodies, then some light-hearted entertainment and finally Breast Specialist
Consultant from Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Penny McManus will
demonstrate how to correctly examine the breasts. Ladies will be asked to remove
their upper clothing to examine their own breasts. If they prefer to keep their clothes
on, that is fine.
Sheila continues:
“We hope to spread the word far and wide and feel that taking part in
#CheckemOutLIVE will be a positive experience, shared amongst women of all
ages, shapes and sizes. As part of the event ladies can choose to pose, topless for a
group photo which will be used on social media.
Tickets are £5, with all proceeds going to Yorkshire Cancer Research, the only
charity dedicated to addressing specific cancer problems in Yorkshire. The money
raised from #CheckemOutLIVE will go towards raising awareness of cancer and how
to prevent it, promoting screening programmes to increase early detection and
funding innovative research projects, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.
