Water Cycle The Hydrologic Cycle I’ve got the power! Evaporation • Heat energy from the sun causes water in puddles, streams, rivers, seas, oceans or lakes to change from a liquid to water vapor (a gas). • This is called evaporation. •The vapor rises into the air and collects in clouds. Transpiration • Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water out of their leaves. • Transpiration gives evaporation a bit of a hand in getting the water vapor back up into the air. Condensation • As water vapor This is called rises and condensation. cools, it collects around dust particles (or condenses) and forms clouds. Precipitation • When clouds are saturated gravity pulls the water to the earth. Mainly as rain, but sometimes as snow, sleet, and hail. •This is called precipitation. 2 types of Run Off • Surface run off: movement of water on Earth’s surface to collect in rivers, streams, lakes and oceans. • Subsurface run off: movement of water beneath the Earth’s surface that eventually collects in aquifers and springs. Accumulation • a.k.a. collection • Water collects in rivers, lakes, streams, and the ocean. Condensation The Clouds form The movement through plants Transpiration Precipitation The rain falls Evaporation The vapor rises Accumulation 0.5 Consumable 0.5 Nonconsumable How is water distributed on the Earth? 97 % of the world’s Water supply is salt water (seas and oceans). 2 % of the world’s water supply is fresh and frozen in icecaps and glaciers. How is water distributed on the Earth? 0.5 % of the world’s water supply is non-consumable water on land, water in atmosphere or dirty water 0.5% of the world’s water supply is freshwater available for consumption.(lakes, rivers, streams, groundwater)
