Geometry
Properties of 2-Dimensional Shapes Unit
Performance Task (3)
Directions: Read each question carefully and work as quickly as possible. A good strategy is to answer the
questions you are most confident about first; then go back and tackle the more difficult ones. It is
important that you answer every question below with sufficient explanations. Your explanation may include
words, pictures, or other work. You will be scored on both your method and your answer. Be sure to label
and organize all your work.
1. Becky is examining a rectangle, a square, and a rhombus.
a. What are the common properties of the rectangle and the
square?
The common properties of a rectangle and a square is that they
both are quadrilaterals with four sides, four right angles and two
pairs of parallel sides.
b. What are the common properties of the square and the rhombus?
The common properties of a square and a rhombus is that they
both are quadrilaterals with four congruent sides and two pairs
of parallel sides.
c. Of the three figures, which could also be classified as either of
the other two figures? Explain.
A square can be classified as rectangle because both shapes are
quadrilaterals with four right angles.
2. Anna is building a flower garden in the shape below.
a. Name the polygon. Pentagon
b. How many sides and vertices does the polygon have?
A pentagon has 5 sides and 5 vertices.
c. If one side of the garden is 7 feet, what is the perimeter of the
garden? How do you know your answer is correct?
The perimeter is 7 x 5 sides = 35 feet
I know that my answer is correct because there are 5 sides in a
pentagon and if one side is 7 feet, you should multiply 7 times 5.
d. All the angles of the polygon are equal. If the total measure of
the angles is 540°, how many degrees is each angle of the
polygon?
Each angle is 540 divided by 5 equals 108 degrees.
3. Fiona is creating a sculpture for her garden. The lengths of two sides
of a triangle are 15 cm. each. The third side measures 10 cm.
a. What type of triangle is this?
This is an isosceles triangle because it has two equal/congruent
sides.
b. Thinking about angles, what other type of triangle could it be
classified as?
It could also be an acute triangle.
c. Explain your answers using geometric terms.
I know that it could be an acute triangle because if two of the
sides are congruent, then the two angles should be acute angles
that measure less than 90 degrees.
