Was king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire,
who reigned c. 605 BC – 562 BC. According
to the Bible, he conquered Judah and
Jerusalem, and sent the Jews into exile. He
is credited with the construction of the
Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the
destruction of the First Temple. He is
featured in the Book of Daniel and is also
mentioned in several other books of the
Bible.
The gardens were supposedly built by the
Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II around
600 BC. He is reported to have constructed the
gardens to please his homesick wife, Amytis
of Media, who longed for the trees and
fragrant plants of her homeland Persia.[1] The
gardens were destroyed by several
earthquakes after the second century BC
.
