RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS:
Dr. Boyd has contributed to the fields of imaging technology, accelerator and beam
physics, superconducting systems, nuclear physics, and medical physics. He developed
the first fan beam-Xenon detector CT system, which was licensed to GE. The
development of electron beam-based Ultrafast CT, manufactured by Imatron, Inc., has led

to a number of advances in diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the fields of
cardiology and wellness. The development of the CTX-5000 explosives detection
scanner, manufactured by InVision, promises to have a major impact on airline security in
the future. He holds several patents and has published more than 100 articles in these
fields.
