Ancient Mesopotamia Vocabulary –TCI and Interactive Notebooks
Fertile Crescent (p.24): an arc-shaped region in southwest Asia, with rich soil.
(Also known as an area of fertile land in the Middle East between the Tigris and
Euphrates Rivers where ancient civilizations flourished.)
Irrigation (ADD TO “MESOPOTAMIA” PAGE IN NOTEBOOK) (p.34): A means of
supplying land with water.
City-State (p.36): An early city that was like a small, independent country with its
own laws and government. (The basic unit of Sumerian civilization; both a city and
a state.)
Theocracy (NOT IN BOOK): A government based on religion. (Priests ruled in the
name of a god or gods.)
Ziggarut (p.48): an ancient Mesopotamian temple tower with outside staircases
and a shrine at the top. (Sumerians devoted much wealth to them.)
Empire (p.58): a large territory in which several groups of people are ruled by a
single leader or government.
Code of Hammurabi (“code of laws” in TCI book) (p.60): a collection of written
laws and codes; in this case, laws created by the Babylonian King, Hammurabi.
Cuneiform (p.51): writing that uses wedge-shaped characters. (Sumerians wrote
these characters on clay tablets.)
Patriarchal (NOT IN BOOK): a society controlled by men, or a society that favors
men; women have few privileges, or rights.
Nomad (p. 26) One who moves from place to place with no permanent home.
