AnoceangyreisalargesystemofcircularoceancurrentsformedbyglobalwindpatternsandforcescreatedbyEarth’s
rotation.
Themovementoftheworld’smajoroceangyreshelpsdrivethe“oceanconveyorbelt.”Theoceanconveyorbeltcirculates

GarbagePatches
Oceangyrescirclelargeareasofstationary,calmwater.Debrisdriftsintotheseareasand,duetotheregion’slackof
movement,canaccumulateforyears.Theseregionsarecalledgarbagepatches.TheIndianOcean,NorthAtlanticOcean,
andNorthPacificOceanallhavesignificantgarbagepatches.ThegarbagepatchintheNorthPacificOceanissometimes
calledthePacifictrashvortexortheGreatPacificGarbagePatch.
Garbagepatchesarecreatedslowly.MarinedebrismakesitswayintotheGreatPacificGarbagePatch,forinstance,from
currentsflowingalongthewestcoastofNorthAmericaandtheeastcoastofAsia.Someofthedebrisisalsodumpedfrom
oceanvessels.
Thecircularmotionofthegyredrawsinthedebris,mostlysmallparticlesofplastic.Eventually,thedebrismakesitswayto
thecenterofthegyre,whereitbecomestrappedandbreaksdownintoakindofplasticsoup.
Oceanographersandecologistsareconcernedaboutgarbagepatches.Inparticular,theyarestudyingthedegradation,or
