Admissions
Students are encouraged to submit their application to the Biomedical Sciences Program
during the fall or winter. The recommended deadline for a completed application is
February 1. An application is considered by the recruitment committee as soon as it
becomes complete and applications are processed until all positions are filled.
Program Overview
The Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program with its Options in a)
Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, b) Translational Therapeutics, and c) Virology
and Immunology provides predoctoral students curricular training with a unique
focus on human health and disease and the opportunity to concentrate in one
or more disciplinary approaches including biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology,
genetics, immunology, pharmacology, physiology, structural biology, and virology.
Students receive rigorous training that provides the skills necessary to be leaders
in biomedical research and other endeavors that benefit from a rigorous scientific
background, including education, law, journalism, and public policy.
The BMS Graduate Program is an interdepartmental program that engages faculty
from seven basic science and eleven clinical science departments. This broadreaching Program provides students a wide ranging understanding of multiple
disciplines with specific expertise in a chosen area, and encourages interdisciplinary
research that is the hallmark of biomedical sciences in the 21st century.
BMS Graduate Program faculty research emphasis includes anatomy, biochemistry,
cancer, cardiovascular disease, cellular biology, diabetes and obesity, drug
development, genetics, immunology, infectious diseases, microbiology, neuroscience,
pharmacology, physiology, translational medicine, and virology.
Successful applicants will be invited to the Penn State Hershey campus in the winter/
spring at our expense. This visit allows you to:
• Interview with faculty advisors
• Meet current graduate students
• Meet other prospective graduate students
• Experience life in Hershey
Tuition and stipend are provided for all years in the program. The average undergraduate
GPA is 3.6 and the average GRE score is between the 60-70 percentiles.
Campus
The College of Medicine and Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., are just minutes from the
state capital of Harrisburg. The campus includes student housing, outdoor athletic fields,
and outdoor walking path encircling the campus, a daycare center, and an indoor fitness
center complex. Nearby public parks and trails provide many activities for students.
Here, you have the advantages of a Big Ten university in the context of a highly
individualized and integrated research curriculum.
And that’s saying nothing of the smell of chocolate in the air.
