Case Study
Building management systems
Nobbs & Jones supply bespoke heating,
ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) Building
Management Systems (BMS) using PLCs
designed specifically for the building controls
industry. Information such as temperature,
humidity, status, etc. can be shared between
each of these standalone systems and with the
supervisory PC. This is normally done via serial
cabling which proves expensive particularly if
the individual system panels are some distance
apart.
In a recent contract with a Local Health Trust
(LHT), Nobbs & Jones overcame this problem
using the DeviceMaster-RTS.
The LHT recently built three new buildings at
their main site to replace an outdated remote
site and to extend their health care services. In
each of these new buildings there is a discrete
BMS with all of the buildings connected via a
LAN. A DeviceMaster-RTS 4 port unit is used to
connect each of the BMS’s to the LAN. This
allows the remote supervisory PC concurrent
access to the building to both send and receive
information from the BMS.

In addition to the new buildings there are
various remote sites that have smaller BMS’s.
These are linked to the main site via
DeviceMaster-RTS 1 port units, allowing a
supervisor to send and receive information from
the BMS, a task normally involving a standard
telephone modem link between each site.
The existing buildings within the main site are
also being upgraded to include BMS monitoring
via the LAN using both DeviceMaster-RTS units.
‘The DeviceMaster-RTS
units were ideal for this
project as they enabled
monitoring and control
across the LAN, saving
considerable costs.’
