MROQ Programmes of Study
Samuel Mann
This workshop will provide an update on the CITRENZ development of Programmes of Study for the
new National qualifications. There will be discussion about the issues arising while developing
programmes of study for the new National qualifications.
Introduction to R
Adrian Hargreaves
This workshops covers the basics - installation of R, importing packages (libraries) and manipulating
data objects. The looks at basic statistical operations such as data distribution, histograms, density
functions, simple plots, hypothesis testing and introduces data visualisation; 3D plots,
and animation etc. Using R for Data mining including importing large datasets from csv files and
databases, using k-means and other data mining algorithms and some data visualisation techniques.
Teaching with Unit Tests: Formative Assessment with Jasmine.js
Amit Sarkar and Rob Oliver
This workshop will focus on Jasmine, which is a behaviour-driven development framework for
testing JavaScript code. It has a clean, obvious syntax so that tests can be written easily. The main
goal of this workshop is to show the participants, how to use Jasmine to test JavaScript code. We will
write test scripts to verify the correctness of individual methods and we will build working models
which could be used in class or as assignments. Good thing about Jasmine is it does not depend on
any other JavaScript frameworks. It does not even require a DOM. In fact, all attendees' really need
is a JavaScript enabled browser (we will use Chrome) and the Jasmine script, which we will provide.
Perhaps a cup of coffee, big smile and curious mind will help them to fully enjoy this 'hands-on'
workshop.
Tools and Techniques for running a Geographically Extended Classroom (GxLearning)
Michael Verhaart and Stephanie Day
This workshop introduces the concept of GxLearning, where the class is geographically distributed
and students attend either face-to-face or online using web conferencing technologies. There will be
an opportunity to explore the issues and tools necessary to facilitate a class in this manner, including
the use of mobile technologies in the field as part of extending the classroom experience. Attendees
will need to bring their mobile devices (laptops, ipads, tablets or phones) and be prepared to
embrace “messy learning” and have fun.
Git Hub
Kevin Shedlock
This workshop discusses setting up and using GitHub to support multidisciplinary teams working on
capstone projects, games development. The role GitHub has in providing students with evidence for
their CV’s to enable successful participation in internship programmes and staircasing into work.
Matauranga Maori
George Tongariro
In the last three years Whitireia New Zealand and Ngati Toa Rangatira have been in a partnership
which uses the Capstone Projects as a test bed in creating applications involving wider Matauranga
Maori concepts. These projects have involved staff and students who have direct links to Ngati Toa.
This partnership is growing every year with more and more capstone projects involving the creation
of Android Applications and Web based projects involving the revitalisation of Te Reo through
different levels and mapping of Ngati Toa Rangatira sites. This has also involved the creation of
applications for Te Wananga Maori and the School of IT within Whitireia New Zealand.
This workshop will talk about the relationships, the projects, the future involvement and further
future developments in regards to the furthering of Matauranga Maori concepts and Technology.
