Cell Organelle Project
In order to understand the roles that each organelle plays in a cell we’re going to be doing a
project. In this project we’ll be focusing on the functions of each organelle. The manner you
display your knowledge will be up to you.
Option 1: Cell Brochure
Design a brochure using the cell as an attraction such as an amusement park, carnival, or hotel.
The brochure must include the listed organelles which "delight and amaze" their potential
customers. Humor and creativity are encouraged. Use diagrams to illustrate the features of the
cell. Creativity is strongly encouraged but you must remember to include the real facts about the
cell you choose.
Option 2: Haiku
A Haiku is a Japanese poem written in 3 lines. In this class our definition of a Haiku will be: the
first line has exactly 5 syllables, second line 7, and third line 5. An example is below:
It’s the control center
Called the nucleus of the cell
Contains DNA
Please write a Haiku about each organelle incorporating the function/nickname of that organelle.
Then creatively display your haikus in booklet with a coloured drawing of each organelle
Option 3: Cell Collage
Draw a cell diagram on a piece of paper with all of the listed organelles. Then, cut out magazine
or newspaper pictures of objects with similar functions as each of the cell organelles. Neatly
write descriptions of each organelle and how they relate to the magazine or newspaper you cut
out. Paste the cell diagram you drew in the middle of a poster and the diagrams around it. Draw
arrows from each of your analogies to the correct organelle on your diagram to create a collage.
Creativity is strongly encouraged but you must remember to include the real facts about the cell
you choose.
Option 4: Cell Model
Create a model of a plant or animal cell that shows all of the organelles that are listed on the
following page. Each organelle must be labelled and your project must include a description of the
“job” of each organelle.
Cell Project Requirements
You must include the following organelles and their functions/analogies:
Animal Cell:
 Cytoplasm/Skeleton
 Rough endoplasmic
 Golgi apparatus
reticulum
 Mitochondria
 Smooth endoplasmic
 Cell membrane
reticulum




Nucleus
Ribosomes
Lysosomes
Vacuole
Plant Cell: (Because there are more organelles your project will be graded out of 70)
 All of the animal cells organelles listed above plus
 Chloroplasts
 Cell wall
Point Breakdown
Animal Cell - Organelles (5 points each) x 10 organelles) - 50 points
Plant Cell – Organelles (5 points each x 12 organelles) - 60 points
Organization – 5 points
Grammar/Spelling - 5 points
Total: Animal Cell - 60 points Plant Cell – 70 points
