Course Description
World History is an in-depth examination of the history and geography of the world from the
Renaissance to the present. Activities focus on the analysis of events, their causes and effects, and the
development of modern nations. Social, cultural, political, scientific, and intellectual developments in
civilization are studied for the purpose of educating and stimulating the academic curiosity of each
student. This course fulfills the graduation requirement for one unit of social studies for the standard
diploma. Course objectives meet the Alabama Course of Study and are correlated to the Alabama
High School Graduation Exam and Stanford Achievement Test.
Course Prerequisites
9th grade status is the prerequisite for World History and Geography since 1500.
Essential Functions
To be successful in this class, students must be able to perform the following tasks and demonstrate the
following skills at grade level or higher
 Read and comprehend text and supplemental readings
 Communicate in written and oral forms using standard grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph
structure
 Understand and respond in written and oral forms to higher order questions
 Actively participate in classroom discussions
 Take accurate and useful notes
 Work effectively in cooperative learning groups
 Demonstrate independent study skills
Successful completion of this course is dependent upon student utilization of these skills in analyzing
and evaluating historical problems and issues through primary and secondary source materials.
Textbooks and Materials
The textbook used in this class is Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction. The course will also
include many supplemental readings from primary and secondary source documents. The instructor
will select the supplemental readings.
Grading Policy
The final grade for each grading period will be based on various methods of assessment. These
include, but are not limited to, tests, homework assignments, journals, projects, portfolios, essays,
organized notebooks, quizzes (announced and unannounced), and class participation. The nine weeks’
grade will be determined by dividing the total number of points earned by the total possible number of
points. That means that each and every grade has a significant impact on the nine weeks grade. A
comprehensive assessment will be administered at the end of each nine weeks. The comprehensive
assessment will count twenty percent (20%) of the nine weeks’ grade. The final course grade will be
determined by averaging the four nine weeks’ grades, which count 1/5 of the final grade each (1/5 x 4
= 4/5). The comprehensive final exam, which counts 1/5 of the total grade may be optional if student
meets requirements (see below).
Exemption Policy
In order to be exempt from a semester exam at semester’s end a 9-12 grade student must
 Possess an A (90-100) average with 6 or fewer absences, or
 Possess a B (80-89) average with 4 or fewer absences, or
 Possess a C (70-79) average with 2 or fewer absences,
AND
 Have no discipline referrals that result in detention or suspension during the semester.
Comprehensive semester exams for all courses to be weighted 1/5 of semester average. The final
course grade for students in grades 9-12 who meet exemption criteria will be determined from the
average of the four nine weeks’ grades.
