Lamar University SPHS 6322 Anatomy and Physiology Fall 2016 Instructor: Connie L. Howard, AuD., CCC-A Office: 120 E Phone: (409)880-8803 Email: [email protected] Office hours: 1-3 Monday and Wednesday or by appointment Description and Objectives: Course Description A study of human anatomy and physiology with emphasis on the auditory and vestibular system. This course will cover the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and the central auditory nervous system. The content will also focus on conductive, sensory and neurological bases of hearing loss and the balance system. Course Objectives and KASA Competencies: A1, A2, C4 Completion of this course the student should be able to: 1. Be able to identify the anatomy associated with the outer, middle and inner ear as well as the anatomy of the central auditory system. 2. Be able to understand the physiology of the outer, middle and inner ear and central audiotory system. 3. Be able to discuss the transfer of sound energy from air through the entire auditory system including the pathway through the central auditory system. 4. Be able to identify the anatomy and understand the physiology of the organ of Corti and the mechanics of sound transfer through the inner ear to the cellular level. 5. Understand where the elctro-physiologic measures of the inner ear are coming from. 6. Identify the central auditory pathways and discuss the fiber tracts in terms of frequency resolution, binaural interactions, and complex auditory stimuli. 7. Identify the anatomy and understand the physiology of the vestibular system in the inner ear to the cellular level. 8. Understand the basics of mitosis and meiosis. 9. Know the innervation of the outer, middle, inner ear. 10. Know the blood supply of the outer, middle, inner ear and central auditory nervous system. Required Text: Clark, W. & Ohlemiller, K. (2008) Anatomy and Physiology of Hearing for Audiologists. Singular publishing: New York. ISBN 1401814441 Grading Policy Assessment will be 5 comprehensive exams counting as 80% of the final grade. All exams are comprehensive. A total of 5 short papers counting as 10% total. The papers will be cited in APA formatting and be at least 2.5 to 3 pages and no more than 3 pages in length. Paper due dates are on blackboard. An electronic notebook outlining the anatomy and physiology of the ear, complete with labeled pictures will make up the final 10% of the grade. Grading Scale: A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D= 65-69% F= 64 and below ACADEMIC HONESTY: Make yourself aware of and familiar with Lamar University’s policies regarding student conduct and academic honesty (these can be found in the Lamar University Student Handbook). Suspicion of academic dishonesty / plagiarism will be pursued to the fullest extent. The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is located in the Communications building room 105. Office staff collaborate with students who have disabilities to provide and/or arrange reasonable accommodations. For students: • If you have, or think you may have, a disability (e.g., mental health, attentional, learning, chronic health, sensory, or physical), please contact the DRC at 409-880-8347 or [email protected] to arrange a confidential appointment with the Director of the DRC to explore possible options regarding equitable access and reasonable accommodations. • If you are registered with DRC and have a current letter requesting reasonable accommodations, we encourage you to contact your instructor early in the semester to review how the accommodations will be applied in the course. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES: Many types of emergencies can occur on campus; instructions for specific emergencies such as severe weather, active shooter, or fire can be found at http://www.lamar.edu/about-lu/administration/risk-management/index.html. Severe Weather: Follow the directions of the instructor or emergency personnel Seek shelter in an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor, putting as many walls as possible between you and the outside If you are in a multi-story building, and you cannot get to the lowest floor, pick a hallway in the center of the building Stay in the center of the room, away from exterior walls, windows, and doors Violence / Active Shooter (CADD): CALL- 9-1-1 AVOID- If possible, self-evacuate to a safe area outside the building. Follow directions of police officers. DENY- Barricade the door with desk, chairs, bookcases or any items. Move to a place inside the room where you are not visible. Turn off the lights and remain quiet. Remain there until told by police it’s safe. DEFEND- Use chairs, desks, cell phones or whatever is immediately available to distract and/or defend yourself and others from attack Academic Continuity Statement In the event of an announced campus closure in excess of four days due to a hurricane or other disaster, students are expected to login to Lamar University’s website’s homepage (www.Lamar.edu) for instructions about continuing courses remotely.
