Established by the European Commission Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) in Horizon 2020 Daniela Corda Institute of Protein Biochemistry, CNR, Napoli; Delegate for Italy in the ERC, Marie SlodowskaCurie Actions, Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) configurations of Horizon 2020 [Horizon 2020] The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation 2014-2020 A core part of Europe 2020, Innovation Union & European Research Area: Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing people’s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment Strengthening the EU’s global position in research, innovation and technology Three strategic priorities: Open Innovation: combining diverse sources of knowledge Open Science: open access, research integrity Open to the World: science diplomacy, global scientific and technological collaboration to remain relevant and competitive 2 [Horizon 2020 Structure] Excellent Science European Research Council Frontier research by the best individual teams Future and Emerging Technologies Collaborative research to open new fields of innovation Marie Skłodowska Curie actions Opportunities for training and career development Research infrastructures (including e-infrastructure) Ensuring access to world-class facilities Industrial Leadership Societal Challenges Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies ICT, nanotechnologies, materials, biotechnology, manufacturing, space Health, demographic change and wellbeing Access to risk finance Leveraging private finance and venture capital for research and innovation Secure, clean and efficient energy Innovation in SMEs Fostering all forms of innovation in all types of SMEs Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research & the bioeconomy Smart, green and integrated transport Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies Secure society 3 FET: Novel ideas for radically new technologies visionary thinking … but very concrete mission € 2.6 billion to initiate radically new lines of technologies - collaborative research - extend Europe’s capacity for advanced and paradigm-changing innovation. - foster scientific collaboration across disciplines on radically new, high-risk ideas 4 [FET Pathfinding Europe's technological future] Open, light and agile FET-Open Early Ideas Individual research projects Exploring novel ideas Roadmap based research FET Proactive FET Flagships Exploration and Incubation Topical clusters of research projects Large-Scale Partnering Initiatives Common research agendas Developing topics & communities Addressing grand challenges 5 [FET : Main Lines of activities] FET Open supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas towards radically new future technologies. It also funds coordination and support activities for such high-risk forward looking research to prosper in Europe. -> Initial stages of developing ideas into a proof-of-concept FET Proactive addresses promising directions for research on future technologies in order to build up a European critical mass of knowledge and excellence around them. -> Being “lighthouse” and reference for others (community building), within which the technology and its uses can be taken up in the future. FET Flagships are science-driven, large-scale, multidisciplinary research initiatives oriented towards a unifying goal, aiming at transformational impacts with substantial benefits for European competitiveness and for society. 6 FET Gatekeepers Long-term vision Interdisciplinary S&T breakthrough Future and Emerging Technologies Novelty High-risk Foundational Funded projects Interdisciplinarity Mathematics in FET Open 2014-15 Total Main Listed proposals 46 Main Listed proposals involving mathematics expertise 9 Success (retained/submitted) 19,56 % H2020 FETOPEN Project Portfolio and Mathematics BREAKBEN- Breaking the Nonuniqueness Barrier in Electromagnetic Neuroimaging ICARUS - Innovative Coarsening-resistant Alloys with enhanced Radiation tolerance and Ultrafine -grainedStructure for aerospace application IBSEN- Bridging the gap: from Individual Behaviour to the Socio-tEchnical MaN VOXEL - volumetric medical x-ray imaging at extremely low dose MAGICSKY - Magnetic Skyrmions for Future Nanospintronic Devices DEDALE - Data Learning on Manifolds and Future Challenges NEMF21 - Noisy Electromagnetic Fields - A Technological Platform for Chip-to-Chip Communication in the 21st Century MSmed: Mass spectrometric technology for next generation proteomics in systems medicine RECORD-IT - Reservoir Computing with Realtime Data for future IT 10 Future Trends for Mathematics in H2020 An online consultation on mathematics was carried out from 29 January to 15 May 2016 by the European Commission Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content & Technology (DG CONNECT) in the context of a stakeholder consultation to prepare the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2018-2020. https://ec.europa.eu/futurium/en/content/mathematics-europe-report-openconsultation 181 contributions received Contributions from online consultation in Mathematics FET Flagships What are they? ■ Science-driven, large-scale, long-term research initiatives built around an ambitious unifying vision ■ They tackle grand S&T challenges requiring interdisciplinary cooperation and involving academia and industry ■ They aim to convert scientific advances into technology developments, enabling concrete innovations that benefit Europe's industry, economy and society High-Level Round Table Brussels, 15 December 2016 Preparing for Future FET Flagships Overview of Position Papers Thomas Skordas Acting Director, DG Connect European Commission 19 Inputs to the Round Table 48 position papers expressing: ■ support to 14/24 topics submitted at the public consultation ■ views to merging several topics ■ support to a few new topics ■ … but also the need to review implementation & governance, selection procedures, etc. 14 ideas for Flagships… Future of Healthcare Robot Companions Extreme Computing & Climate Human Organ Printing ~15 ~14 ~8 Venice Time Machine ~6-7 NanoArchitectronics ~13 Ultimate Earth project ~6-7 ALL Direct Conversion of Solar Energy ~17 ~18 ~23 ~30 Synthetic Cell Climate change & the Agro-food chain MS 4D Nucleome ~11 Regenerative Medicine ~8 Sensory Restoration Super conductors ~5 ~5 … clustered in big S&T Areas ICT for Connected Society Robot Companions Nano-Architectronics ALL MS Health & Life Sciences Future of Healthcare 4D Nucleome Superconductors Energy, Environment, Climate Change Direct Conversion of Solar Energy Climate change & the Agro-food chain Ultimate Earth project Synthetic Cell Venice Time Machine Extreme Computing & Climate Regenerative Medicine Human Organ Printing Sensory Restoration FETAG recommendations • Three thematic fields (Grand Challenges) HEALTH and MEDICINE Personalized Medicine, Gene Editing, Synthetic cells, Wearable and Implanted Technologies, Technology for the Elderly, Management of Health Systems.
