Cell News 7
MOVIE MAKER (Windows live)
Learning Center 1
Developed by: Katherine Clophus
Sulphur High School
Next Generation Science Standards:
 HS.LS-SFIP Structure, Function, and Information Processing Students who demonstrate
understanding can:
 a. Obtain and communicate information explaining how the structure and function of systems of
specialized cells within organisms help them perform the essential functions of life.
Introduction:
Cells are the fundamental units of life; they contain structures called organelles which carry out specific
functions. Organelles have a wide range of responsibilities within a cell that include everything from providing
energy to producing hormones and enzymes. Eukaryotic cells contain several types of organelles, while
prokaryotic cells contain a few organelles (ribosomes) and none that are bound by a membrane. There are also
differences between the kinds of organelles found within different eukaryotic cell types. Plant cells have
structures that are not found in animal cells such as cell wall and chloroplasts. Both animal cells and plant cells
contain the following structures: nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi complex, and ribosomes,
and other vesicles.
Big Question:
 How do various organelles aid in cell processes?
Guiding Question:
 Describe the function of the organelles contain in eukaryotic cells?
 Explain how the function of these organelles aid in the life of the cell.
Task:
You are a member of the Cell News 7 news team. Your job as a member of the news teams it to inform the
body of current events in the cell.
Your objective is to present a news programs (using Windows Movie Maker) about the function of cell
organelles.
Process:
To accomplish this task, you and your team will work collaboratively using the following steps:
1. You will be working as a member of the Cell News 7 news teams to make a short news program (3-5
minutes) to educate the body about cell function.
2. Before making your news program, you will collaborate with your team to decide which organelles you
will include in your news program. You will also create a “news names” ex. Mitch Mitochondria or Vicki
Vacuole. Use your textbook or the following website as a reference: http://www.cellsalive.com
3. To make your news program, you and your team members will choose one of the following individual
jobs:
 News Caster- You will present a news story based on the chosen organelle. Your story should
include information about the function and structure of the organelle. You should include a
photos or a short video clip explaining your organelle.
 Reporter- You will act as an on the scene reporter. You will create a developing story about your
chosen organelle. Your story should include information about the function and structure of the
organelle. You should include a photos or a short video clip explaining your organelle.
 Sports Caster- You will act as the news sports caster. You will create a sports story about your
organelle. Your story should include information about the function and structure of the
organelle. You should include a photos or a short video clip explaining your organelle.
 Weather person- You will act as the news weather person. You will create a weather story
bases on your organelle. Your story should include information about the function and structure
of the organelle. You should include a photos or a short video clip explaining your organelle.
 Cinematographer- All of you will act as cinematographer and begin to familiarize yourselves
with the Moviemaker software which is what your group will use to produce the news
programs. After you have done this, you should work with each of the other so that you are
familiar with the type of information that they are finding.
 You many use the following website to obtain video clips: http://www.cellsalive.com,
http://beta.lpb.org/index.php/education/
4. After you have completed your individual research, you will come back together as a group and you will
plan out the 3-5 minute news program as a group using a storyboard template; there are two from
which to choose:
storyboard template 1 or storyboard template 2
As your group begins to plan the news program, keep the following things in mind:





You have access to a flip camera which you can use to video your portion.
Be creative. Moviemaker will allow you to insert video or pictures. You can also create
PowerPoint slides and save them as .jpgs which you then can put into your Moviemaker
presentation.
Each team member will narrate and present his/her portion of the job.
Follow your rubric closely for the best possible video.
As group cinematographers you will make sure that a title frame and a credits frame naming the
members of your team are included.
5. After your team has planned the news program, you may go to the group’s assigned computer(s) and
begin creating the documentary. You may use the Moviemaker Quick Tips to help you make your
documentary.
6. One member on your team will upload the final product to a flash drives which will be turned into Mrs.
Clophus.
Evaluation:
See rubric attached.
Reflective Question or Constructive Response:
Upon completion of this learning center, you should have learned more about cell organelle structure and
function.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Describe the differences between plant and animal cells.
Explain the role of the cell membrane in cell function.
Explain the importance of the folded structure of the ER and the golgi apparatus.
Explain why the mitochondria are known as the “powerhouse” of the cell.
