VASCULAR PLANTS
What is a vascular plant?
Vascular plants are all around you. Trees, flowers, and numerous plants are all
considered vascular plants. Vascular plants contain a vascular system, which is similar
to our circulatory system. Vascular systems enable the transport of water, minerals,
and sugar to all parts of a plant. Circulatory systems enable the transport of blood,
nutrients, and important gases.

What is vascular tissue?
Vascular tissue makes up the vascular system and is present in all parts of a plant. The
two main types of vascular tissues are xylem and phloem. Each vascular tissue has its
own responsibility.
xylem - transports water and minerals from the tips of the roots to
the tips of the leaves.
phloem - transports sugars to all parts of the plant.
What is a nonvascular plant?
A nonvascular plant does not have vascular tissue. This means that all nonvascular
plants do not have roots, stems, and leaves. Moss, which is found on trees and in very
moist environments, is an example of a nonvascular plant.

How is the vascular system similar to our circulatory system?
Vascular Tissue
Vascular tissue is vital to vascular plants. Xylem and phloem are two important parts of
a plant's vascular tissue.
As stated in the introduction page, xylem helps transport water and minerals. With the
help of xylem, water and minerals move upward (from the roots) to all parts of the
plant.
Phloem is important for transporting sugars. Plants use sugars for food. Plants get
sugars from a process called photosynthesis (You will learn more about this process in
the next section). The phloem tissues move sugars downward toward the roots.
Sugars
Water and minerals
Answer the following questions.
1) A human's circulatory system is similar to a plant's ______________________system.
2) Two types of tissue make up a plant's vascular tissue:__________________________ and
_____________________.
3) _______________________________ moves sugars downward toward the roots.
4) _______________________________ move minerals and water upward toward all parts of
the plant.
Vascular Plants
Draw a picture of a vascular plant. Identify its roots, stem, and leaves.
Can you name vascular plants that you find in your neighborhood?
