Two ensembles from Krakow – The Orchestra of the Royal City of Krakow Sinfonietta Cracovia
and vocal ensemble Cracow Singers shall cooperate for the unusual project.

The beginnings of Sinfonietta Cracovia can be traced to 1990 when the ensemble “Krakow Young Chamber Players” was
founded. Highly skilled, committed and exhibiting new approach to music artists immediately became recognizable, yet their further
growth depended primarily on obtaining a proper funding. Supported by Elżbieta and Krzysztof Penderecki, in 1994 the orchestra was
transformed into the city’s cultural institution and received a new name: Sinfonietta Cracovia. The Orchestra of the Royal Capital City
of Krakow.
Due to its exceptional qualities, the ensemble soon achieved great success and garnered enthusiastic acclaim both from the
audience and the critics. Apart from performing classical orchestral literature composed for chamber and larger orchestra, the
musicians have effectively participated in other, unconventional artistic initiatives. This profile, comprising a wide scope of musical
engagements (ranging from classical music concerts to performances at Unsound Festival), has become the Sinfonietta’s trademark
ever since.
For over 20 years the orchestra has been led by an excellent violinist, viola player and pedagogue Robert Kabara. Under his
supervision (he served as a director, concertmaster and soloist) Sinfonietta has developed its individual style, succeeded in many
projects and recorded a number of albums. Much tribute should also be paid to violinist Adam Balas who was the orchestra’s manager
in the years 1997-2010. He initiated several artistic projects and influenced and formed the ensemble’s image of a versatile musical
group. Sinfonietta’s significance was also proved by the cooperation with an outstanding American artist John Axelrod who was
a conductor-in-residence during the years 2001-2009. Under his baton the orchestra together with Camerata Silesia participated in the
recording session of the BBC programme Holocaust; A Music Memorial Film from Auschwitz, having documented the performance of
fragments of W.A. Mozart’s Requiem and H.M. Górecki’s Sympony No 3 given in the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
The programme received the International Emmy Award in 2005.
In July 2014 Jurek Dybał opened a new chapter in Sinfonietta’s history. New director of the orchestra based in Cracow
is simultaneously a talented conductor, organiser and member of the famous Vienna Philharmonic. Sinfonietta Cracovia with its new
management started the 20th anniversary celebrations with a concert during the 2nd Krzysztof Penderecki International Festival “Level
320”. The musicians have performed under the baton of many famous conductors, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Antoni Wit, Jerzy
Maksymiuk, Christoph Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Ludwig Wicki, and collaborated with the world’s elite solosts – Maxim
Vengerov, Boris Pergamenshikov, Rudolf Buchbinder, Mischa Maisky, Pieter Wispelwey, Ilya Gringolts, Kaja Danczowska, Irena
Grafenauer, Barry Douglas, Tabea Zimmermann, Grigori Zhyslin, Konstanty Kulka, François Leleux, Isabelle Moretti, Janusz Olejniczak,
Piotr Pławner, Radovan Vlatković and others.
The orchestra has been invited to perform at several renowned festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Festival
International de Colmar, the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival, Sacrum Profanum, Misteria
Paschalia, in many prestigious music venues – St. Petersburg Conservatory and the Mariinsky Theatre, Philharmonic Hall and
Konzerthaus in Berlin, Herkulessaal in Munich, Casino Hall in Basel and Tonhalle in Zurich, Théâtre Mogador in Paris, Palais des Festivals
et des Congrès in Cannes, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, theatres in Brescia, Naples and Parma, Philharmonic Hall in Istanbul
and many others.
Sinfonietta Cracovia has made numerous audio recordings, participated in productions of BBC Classical Music Television, TV Arte
in France and Television in Poland, and recorded soundtracks to films and TV series directed by Agnieszka Holland, Janusz Zaorski, Jan
Komasa and Jan Kidawa-Błoński. Most recent engagements involve the motion picture soundtrack City ’44. The orchestra has
repeatedly been invited to perform during the Film Music Festival in Cracow.
Sinfonietta Cracovia’s albums include recordings for prestigious record labels such as Arion, Channel Classics, DUX and CD
Accord. One of the newly released CDs presents Beethoven’s piano concertos recorded by a great pianist Rudolf Buchbinder who
performed with Sinfonietta at the 6th Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival.

Cracow Singers vocal ensemble
Vocal ensemble formed in 2013 consists of experienced professional singers whose mission is to create the conceptual and
musical experience at its best. The members of the ensemble have been actively taking part in music festivals in Poland and abroad
and have recorded CD album in the Polish Radio. Their experience enables the singers to produce high-quality performances of
different genres of vocal and vocal-instrumental music. The Cracow Singers vocal ensemble stands out with it consistency in the sphere
of aesthetics of sound and the quality of interpretation.
Vocal ensemble performs interdisciplinary, crossover projects in collaboration with various cultural institutions. International
project „Kantor – anwesend – abwesend” was created in collaboration with the Centre for Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor
– Cricoteka and Nurnberg House in Krakow.
Cracow Singers was invited by the Internationale Musikverlage Hans Sikorski from Hamburg to participate in the international
musical project presenting the latest composition of Lera Auerbach. The high level of artistic performance and exceptional sound
quality of vocal ensemble was appreciated by the Polish jazz musician, composer and singer, Stanisław Soyka. Original Stanislaw
Soyka’s compositions to the words of William Shakespeare were then arranged by Karol Kusz for the a cappella performance and
recorded on the two-disc album entitled Soyka & Cracow Singers. Shakespeare a cappella.
Cracow Singers is also presenting a programme with a cappella versions of Krzysztof Penderecki’s works directed by Maciej
Tworek. This year ensemble started cooperation with the Orchestra of the Royal City of Krakow – Sinfonietta Cracovia in the project
with Arvo Pärta’s music. Swiss Ensemble Peregrina has also invited Cracow Singers to participate in the project of ancient music.
The group is involved in various cultural events in Kraków such as Cracovia Sacra, or Muzyczne czwartki (Music Thursdays) in
Dworek Białopradnicki community centre. Celebrating the Year of Witold Lutosławski, the Cracow Singers in cooperation with the
Beethoven Academy Orchestra, performed a cycle of concerts entitled Ptasie Plotki, czyli rzecz o muzyce (Birds’ gossip or things
musical), with the music of the composer (half-staged version).
Cracow Singers had the honor to sing at the opening ceremony of the Museum of Poles Saving Jews name of Ulma’s Family on
the 17 March 2016 in Markowa.

Widely known and respected conductor, organiser and member of the famous
Vienna Philharmonic. His charismatic personality has been valued by the listeners of many
European music venues, in which he has made appearances with the Vienna Chamber
Orchestra, Vienna Concert-Verein Orchestra, Vienna Art Orchestra, Orchestre
Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuopio
Symphony Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony
Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Polish
Radio Symphony Orchestra, Silesian Chamber Orchestra, Wroclaw Chamber Orchestra
Leopoldinum, Philharmonic Orchestras in Poznań, Cracow and Łódź, Polish Baltic
Philharmonic and National Forum of Music Symphony Orchestra. As an active performer
of early music he has worked with the renowned ensemble Concerto Köln and Marc
Minkowski’s Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble. The artist conducted several open-air
performances (including the concert with Romani violinist Roby Lakatos), as well as
chamber operas and concert galas with the soloists of the Vienna State Opera, staged in
Hofburg Palace in Vienna. Open for projects involving jazz, folk, world and film music, he
has participated in various cross-over productions and cooperated with gypsy jazz group
“No Limit” from Vienna, Chinese erhu player Zen Hu and Tytus Wojnowicz. Having created
multimedia performances conveying the unconventional presentation of 20th– and 21stcentury music, he invited Krzysztof Penderecki, Wojciech Pszoniak, Edward Lutczyn, Polish
Dance Theatre from Poznań and Daniel Stryjecki to participate in his projects.
Jurek Dybał has dedicated himself to promoting and popularizing Polish music. He conducted the Polish premiere of Krzysztof
Penderecki’s Adagio for Strings and participated in the world premiere of the composer’s quintet Leaves from an Unwritten Diary and
Duo concertante (Polish and French premiere). He initiated the Viennese premiere of Franciszek Lessel’s Ouverture (performed by the
Vienna Chamber Orchestra) and introduced the music of Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki to Concerto Köln ensemble. The artist
premiered the compositions of Krzesimir Dębski. Together with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra he founded a special award for a prizewinner of the 14th Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition by inviting Soyoung Yoon to perform in Konzerthaus in Vienna.
He has worked with several outstanding artists, including Yuri Bashmet, Julian Rachlin, Angela Hewitt, Itamar Golan, Mihaela Ursuleasa,
Michel Lethiec, Frans Helmerson, Arto Noras, Erwin Schrott, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Piotr Paleczny, Xavier de Maistre, Gábor Boldoczki
and many others. As a chamber musician he has performed with Vienna Piano Quintet, Prima Vista Quartet, Silesian String Quartet,
Wiener Virtuosen, Fine Arts Quartet, Shanghai Quartet, Talich Quartet and Münchner Septet. He recorded for Polish (DUX), Belgian
(R.C.P.) and Japanese (Camerata) record labels and was a recipient of two Fryderyk Awards granted by the Polish Phonographic
Academy. In the years 2010-2012 he was a professor at Dresden University of Music. During the Mahler’s Year Celebrations the artist
was asked to plant the “Mahler rose” in the garden of a newly renovated Mahler’s birth house, among such personalities as Vaclav
Havel and Thomas Hampson.
