Created an high performance OLAP database to support complex queries and calculations across approximately 100 million survey responses. The solution is based on the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 BI stack. Refined user requirements, created proof of concept, lead developer for the OLAP survey database. Dimensional modelling using Kimball methodology. Developed SSIS packages to transfer data from the OLTP database to a data warehouse, from the data warehouse to the processing OLAP cube and then to the web facing querying cubes; also integrated packages with an auditing database. Designed and built OLAP cube in SSAS; created calculations to support business requirements. Wrote MDX queries for integration with front-end web site. Performance testing. Multiple SQL Server installations. Helped release the solution across 5 separate environments. Upgraded databases and SSIS packages from SQL 2005 to 2008. Provided skills transfer for existing team. Worked closely with DBAs and Technical Architect to define overall architecture which consisted of 20 servers (across 5 environments) and failover in multiple places to produce a resilient solution. SQL Server 2005 and 2008; SSIS; SSAS; Stored Procedures; Replication; TFS; Agile (SCRUM). ActiveIS (contract) (Microsoft Gold Partner) SENIOR BI CONSULTANT: 1997 - 2009 Business Intelligence architect and Microsoft SQL Server lead working closely with .NET development team. Deciding on technical focus of company and architecting Microsoft-based technical solutions for client projects. Experience of the full software development lifecycle. Typical project involvement includes: Meetings and/or workshops with stakeholders and sponsors to gather business requirements Determine dimensional model with business users Define data sources with technical users Define any additional data capture requirements needed to fulfil the business requirements Perform data modelling and design logical and physical databases Estimate sizing and specify hardware requirements Performance tuning Design and develop Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) routines to port data from disparate sources such as SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Access, Excel etc. Design and develop KPIs, reports and dashboards Implement security model for appropriate access to reports and data Distribute reports to end users via Reporting Services, MOSS 2007 or work with .NET development team to deliver reporting functionality as part of a .NET solution. Liaise with 3rd party suppliers and/or customers where necessary Review budgetary estimates with stakeholders and sponsors Communication of proposed technical solution to non-technical users Adopt an iterative approach to ensure quality of end product and timely delivery Assist end users with user acceptance testing TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Highly experienced in Microsoft BI stack including SQL Server Database Engine, Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services. Data modelling; logical and physical database design. Data manipulation and analysis using TSQL, Access, Excel and ProClarity. Proficient in all Microsoft Office products including Visio and Project. ACHIEVEMENTS: - BI functional requirements, technical architecture and development of Candorsys, a highly complex, web-based, financial asset aggregation OLAP database. Working closely with a former head of IT for UBS Private Bank in Europe. The application imports portfolio holding data from multiple investment houses into a SQL Server 2005 relational database and enables the user to classify each asset according to asset type, sector, market and currency. Different users of the system have access to one or more portfolios, this security is passed through to the cube. Data is aggregated into an OLAP cube and used by a suite of Reporting Services reports which are exposed via report viewer controls in a .NET front end web site. The reports are designed to show high net worth individuals their total asset value across their range of portfolios and let them drill down to see their exposure by asset class, sector etc. Sophisticated algorithms enable them to measure portfolio performance across date ranges and compare it to benchmark performance. For more information see www.candorsys.com. - Installed and configured SQL Server database, Reporting Services and Integration services. Set up database maintenance plans. Designed and developed databases and reports for Aldwyck Housing Association’s data warehouse including key performance indicators. Configured security so that users only have access to appropriate reports. An overnight SSIS package imports new data from the LOB system to a dedicated reporting server. A suite of reports are available for monthly, quarterly and ad-hoc reporting. A report model allows a small number of ‘power users’ to generate their own ad-hoc reports. - Designed and implemented overall architecture for the OLAP database and reports used to analyse the effectiveness of Christian Aid’s web site. Every action on the web site is recorded in a metrics database. An overnight SSIS package imports daily metrics data and incrementally updates the cube from the online metrics database and the internal CRM application. A suite of reports enable users to measure the performance of the web site and do like by like comparison of online and offline figures within the same report. - Designed a highly complex SQL Server database used as a back-end for a combination of web sites and offline publications including whatcar.com and What Car? magazine. This high profile database architecture was designed to serve as a back end database for www.whatcar.com, www.autocarmag.com, data tables in the What Car? Magazine, data tables in Autocar magazine and other subsidiary publications and web sites including 3 rd party feeds to the likes of AOL and Sainsburys Bank. I interviewed all the publishers and editors as well as the staff responsible for collecting and updating the data before coming up with a suitable design which replaced a collection of Access databases and spreadsheets. The database was also designed to enable 3rd party suppliers to enter supplementary data such as target prices and insurance groups via an extranet. OTHER ROLES: - Business analysis; defining functional and technical requirements Project management; using waterfall methodology and some use of Agile Account management; scoping and estimating new projects Team leading of a .NET development team including recruitment of new staff Freelance CONTEXT: (various blue-chip corporate clients) 1994 - 1997 Working as a developer and data warehouse architect specialising in the Microsoft toolset.
