Product Knowledge Manual (Foundations) Page ii August 13, 2012 What is Mineral Makeup? Mineral makeup is made with a high percentage of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide which are minerals that reflect the sun’s UV rays away from the skin as well as help to conceal and heal blemishes and irritation. Most mineral makeup comes in powder form, either pressed or loose and have various added ingredients depending on what brand you choose. Some companies add organic fruit or plant ingredients and vitamins to their makeup, but Illuminare has only inorganic ingredients. Our philosophy has always been in sync with what Dermatologists recommend which is to use your organic treatment ingredients on clean skin before using our makeup so that they can penetrate the skin better. Many mineral makeup brands have SPF values of 20 and above, but even so, a light dusting of mineral powder is not enough to give you adequate protection. Even if you use a product with a very high SPF value, you may not be getting the protection you need against skin damaging UVA radiation. SPF tells you the number of minutes you can be in the sun without showing redness from UVB. However, UVA is even more damaging to the skin. The FDA now requires all products claiming to have UVA protection to adhere to strict rules on labeling so as not to mislead the public or give consumers a false sense of security. The new labeling rules require all sunscreens and sunscreen makeup to be tested for UVA protection in order to be labeled “Broad Spectrum”. Illuminaré foundations and blush offer you broad spectrum protection. Mineral makeup is thought to be more healthy for your skin in general because there are less chemicals, fillers, dyes and ingredients overall than traditional makeup. Our mineral makeup has minimal ingredients which were selected for gentleness. There are many brands of mineral makeup today but only one brand specializes in making a unique liquid version and that is Illuminaré. Page 1 August 13, 2012 What makes Our Liquid Mineral Makeup Unique? Illuminaré was invented for those who prefer a creamy liquid version of mineral makeup instead of mineral powders. It gives great coverage and looks more like “real skin” than other makeup. It gives you a natural looking luminosity and it is never cakey or dry looking. Illuminaré offers not one but three separate foundation formulas to choose from for different needs: Moisturizing, Concealing or Mattifying. Our true to life shades are made of natural iron oxides pigments, not artificial dyes and each shade is tested in natural daylight, not under artificial lights. We also make our formulas concentrated, you don’t have to wear as much makeup. A little goes a long way. There are no oils, waxes, plant extracts, perfumes, artificial dyes, animal derivatives, mica, bismuth oxychloride, talc, gluten, salicylic acid, carmine or any ingredients that are not absolutely needed in order to make a superior performing makeup and broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen in one. Dermatologists approve of our formulas for those with extremely sensitive skin. All of our cosmetics are multi-use products. The three foundations are sunscreen, makeup and concealer in one. Even our packaging is unique. We use multi- layer medical grade tubes to keep our makeup fresh and clean. They are easy to use and convenient to travel with. You can’t contaminate the products since you can’t put your fingers or brushes into the containers. The products have no real expiration date because they do not spoil. We do not use paraben preservatives. It is important to use them properly for optimum results. Our tools are essential in helping the customer to apply our products correctly. It takes a little getting used to because these formulas have a much higher pigment concentration level than regular, non-mineral foundations. Begin with a clean face and prep skin with an oil-free moisturizer if needed. ONLY A PEA SIZED AMOUNT IS NEEDED FOR A FULL APPLICATION Fast Application Pad What it is: An elegant, soft, large fabric application pad that is washable and very durable. For those that prefer a sponge over a brush. Contains an antibacterial mesh center that won’t absorb product with a soft smooth fabric exterior. Place in washing machine with towels or use gentle detergent by hand. Lay flat to dry. How to use it: Squeeze a pea sized amount to the pointed, beige side of the pad (top is only for decoration). Press into the center of the face and blend outward. This tool makes the application of the foundations or blushes very quick, even and easy. It helps to control the coverage of the product and (if needed) helps blend colors and formulas together for a custom look. Page 7 Foundation Brush What it is: Made of a super soft nylon with an oversized, large oval tip. Can be used to apply our foundation and blushes. Gives an “air brushed” flawless effect to the skin. To clean, simply wash (bristles only) with soap and water or use brush cleaner. How to use it: Either squeeze a pea sized amount directly into the brush and “paint” onto the face and blend OR work in one area at a time, adding more product as necessary. You may also use your fingers to apply the foundation or blush onto the face first, and then blend it out with the brush. Works well to blend colors and formulas together to highlight or contour the face. The foundation brush offers more controlled coverage around the hard to reach eyes, nose and lips. Concealer Brush What it is: Made of a super soft nylon with a small oval tip. Use for spot concealing with our foundations. Also, helps to conceal blemishes and under eye circles with precise, controlled coverage. To clean, simply wash (bristles only) with soap and water or use brush cleaner. How to use it: Use this brush to apply and transform our foundations into concealer. For our foundations, apply a small amount of product to the brush and conceal imperfections such as blemishes, hyper-pigmentation and/or dark under eye circles. Page 8 August 13, 2012 Helpful Ingredient Information Many people will ask you what makes us a mineral foundation and what other ingredients we use to create a liquid mineral foundation. Listed below are some of the main ingredients and terms we use: “Active” Minerals (sunscreen): Titanium Dioxide- Inert earth mineral used as a sunscreen ingredient in cosmetics. It protects skin from UVA and UVB radiation and is considered to have no risk of skin irritation (Sources: www.photodermatology.com/sunprotection.htm; and Skin Therapy Letter, 1997, volume 2, number 5). Zinc Oxide- Inert earth mineral used as a sunscreen ingredient in cosmetics. Along with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide is considered to have no risk of skin irritation. It can also be an anti-irritant (calm redness and skin irritations) and potentially an antioxidant. (Sources: Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, July 2004, pages 131-139; International Journal of Dermatology, July 2003, page 505; Wound Repair and Regeneration, May 2002, page 130; Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, May-June 2001, pages 49-56; and Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, December 1994, pages 255-259.) Other minerals: Iron Oxides- pigmentation, Compounds of iron that are used as colorings in some cosmetics Other main ingredients: Deionized Water- purified water, solvent Glycerin- a humectant, Also called glycerol; it is present in all natural lipids. It can be manufactured by the hydrolysis of lipids. It can also be synthetically manufactured. Glycerin shores up the skin's natural protection by filling in the area known as the intercellular matrix and by attracting just the right amount of water to maintain the skin's homeostasis. There is also research indicating that the presence of glycerin in the intercellular layer helps other skin lipids do their jobs better (Sources: American Journal of Contact Dermatitis, September 2000, pages 165– 169; and Acta Dermato-Venereologica, November 1999, pages 418–421). Cetyl Dimethicone- a skin conditioner, Substance derived from silica. The unique fluid properties of silicone give it a great deal of slip and in its various forms it can feel like silk on the skin, impart emolliency, and be a water-binding agent that holds up well, even when skin becomes wet. In other forms, it is also used extensively for wound healing and for improving the appearance of scars (Source: Journal of Wound Care, July 2000, pages 319–324). Page 9 Popular Terms: UVA/UVB - Ultra-Violet A radiation. The sun produces a range of ultra-violet (UV) radiation. Skin damage such as wrinkling, skin discoloration, sagging, and coarse texture is a consequence of unprotected sun exposure due to the cumulative effect of the sun’s UV radiation. UVA and UVB radiation are the portions of the sun’s rays that cause this damage. UVB radiation causes sunburn, while UVA radiation does not produce any short-term evidence of skin damage. Nonetheless, UVA radiation creates serious cumulative changes in skin that may be far greater than the sunburn caused by UVB radiation. Research has shown that unprotected exposure to UVA rays can, within one week, create distinct injury, such as inflammation, abnormal cell production, stratum corneum (outer layer of skin) thickening, depletion of immune-stimulating cells, and evidence of the possibility of elastin deterioration (Sources: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, May 2001, pages 837–846; Bulletin of the Academy of National Medicine, 2001, volume 185, number 8, pages 1507–1525; Photodermatology, Photoimmunology, and Photomedicine, August 2000, page 147; and Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, January 1995, pages 53–62). To be effective, sunscreens must protect skin from both the sun’s UVA and UVB radiation. In the United States, there are only three ingredients that are approved by the FDA that protect across the full UVA range: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789 and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane). Outside of the United States, Mexoryl SX is also used. (Sources: International Journal of Pharmaceutics, June 2002, pages 85–94; Photodermatology, Photoimmunology, Photomedicine, August 2000, pages 147–155 and www.photodermatology.com/sunprotection.htm; and Skin Therapy Letter, Volume 2, Number 5, 1997.) SPF - Sun protection factor - It is a number assigned to a product that identifies its ability to protect the skin from sunburn or to protect the skin from turning pink or red when exposed to sun. SPF numbering is regulated by the FDA. It is a measure of the amount of time a person can stay in the sun without getting burned if a sunscreen is applied. Since sunburn results from UVB exposure, not UVA radiation, SPF is primarily a measure of UVB protection. At this time, there is no numbering system to indicate the level of protection a sunscreen can provide from UVA radiation, which affects the deeper layers of skin. Active Ingredients - the part of an ingredient label that must adhere to specific regulations mandated by the FDA. Active ingredients must be listed first on an ingredient label. The amount and exact function of each active ingredient is controlled and must be approved by the FDA. Active ingredients are considered to have a pharmacological altering effect on skin, and these effects must be documented by scientific evaluation and approved by the FDA. Active ingredients include such substances as sunscreen ingredients, skin-lightening agents, and benzoyl peroxide. Page 11 Overcoming Objections, a.k.a. Selling Opportunities The following objections can be turned into sales opportunities. • Opportunity: “I don’t wear makeup” – your response: “You don’t wear makeup because it takes too much time? Feels heavy? This product can be applied in seconds with our fast application sponge and it feels virtually weightless while it protects you from further sun damage and makes you look younger instantly, but you won’t believe me until you try it- Here let me show you on the back of your hand!” • Opportunity: “I don’t need anything but my sunscreen” – your response: “Did you know all Illuminaré foundations are sunscreen SPF 20? That is good especially if it has titanium and zinc oxide in it which is what our sunscreen makeup is made of, but if it doesn’t have those minerals in it as “active ingredients” did you know that you are still getting massive amounts of UVA radiation everyday which leads to the breakdown of your skin’s collagen and leads to wrinkling and possibly skin cancer? Look at the ingredients in Illuminaré; every single product is made with these two minerals. In addition, it makes you look fantastic too!” • Opportunity: “I don’t wear makeup because it breaks me out”- your response:” I understand your concern about breaking out. Fortunately, all of Illuminaré cosmetics are made with the gentlest non –sensitizing ingredients and are recommended by all Dermatologists. The creamy liquid formulas merely sit atop the skin. Breakouts are caused by an accumulation of dead skin cells and bacteria inside the pores, so a good cleansing and disinfecting product is the key to clear skin, yet breakouts are often blamed on makeup products. Illuminaré is sold in many acne skin care clinics because of its noncomedogenic and non-sensitizing ingredients. It also contains Zinc Oxide, which is calming agent excellent for inflamed skin. However, no skin care regime is going to keep your skin beautiful for long if it does not involve protection from UVA, so here let me show you how Illuminaré formulas feel and how they protect as well as beautify on contact. • Opportunity: “Well, I’m using _________ brand and have been happy with it for years. I don’t see the need to switch.” –your response:” I totally understand that it takes a long time to find a good makeup and that you are a loyal fan when you find one, however, new technology has allowed Illuminaré to formulate a multi-purpose makeup line that has been fast becoming the favorite of many women like you who were once sworn to using _______ as you are now. (Ask her if her foundation does all the things that Illuminaré does?). All it takes for you to become convinced is to give it a try and it only takes a second, here let me show you on your jaw line.” (Once she sees the difference, it is an instant sell.) • Opportunity: “I’m in between shades and don’t want to have to mix, I think I’ll wait until you create more colors.”- Your response:” I understand that mixing two colors is not the most convenient thing to do, and the company is working towards the goal of expanding the line. However, we Page 12 August 13, 2012 cannot give you an exact time when that may be and waiting until then deprives you of the beauty and sun protection benefits you can have right now. In addition, look how fast you can combine two drops on this fast application sponge to make your own “custom color”! Just a few seconds and it’s done!” Let me show you a little makeup artist secret that is used on top stars to get an instant lift to the face!” Use the lighter up on top of the cheekbones and down the center of the face and see the effect!” • Opportunity: “This makeup feels thick to me, I like a more sheer feeling” –your response: At first some people may think that the formulas are too thick but when they learn the correct way to apply them they are amazed at how very little they need to use, here let me show you using our fast application sponge. If we put some moisturizer on first, it will help the foundation blend on easily. • Opportunity: “I’m in a hurry and don’t have time. I hear what you’ve been saying, I’ll come by another time”-your response:” I know what you mean, there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day anymore! Ask them to take home a brochure. That way you will be able to read about the product at home.” (This is the last resort.) Page 13 The Art of the “Add-on Sale” An “Add-on Sale” is when you suggest another item to the customer in addition to the items requested. Many times staff simply take orders and ask, “Is there anything else I can get for you today” to often hear, “no thanks” as the reply. She did not ask the customer an “open-ended” question. This is a mistake. When you have a customer who is willing to purchase an item, why not suggest another? They may not be aware of the other items, they may have forgotten about them or they may not be aware of there special benefits and what that means to them. All it takes is a suggestion. Some of the best sales people start out with a customer requesting only one item and end up selling over five or more! Nevertheless, the key is to Suggest and Not Push. Customers know if they are being pushed into buying products they feel they do not need. Therefore, the first thing to do is to establish the need, then fill it. If after you suggest an item they still insist, they do not need it or want it. Stop! You will risk damaging their trust in you to look after their needs and to be respectful of their wishes. Some of the best suggestions begin with a question. Here are some ways to begin learning the art of the Add-on Sale. • May I ask what you are using to apply the foundation with (fingers/latex sponge)? I think that our fast application sponge would not only make application faster and more natural looking but to sterilize it all you have to do is throw it in the washing machine and it is clean! (Unlike using the rubber cosmetic sponges or your fingers) May I suggest that you get one today with your foundation?” (You can also use the Add-on sale here and show them the foundation brush, eye color/concealer or eyeliner/ brow brush.) • May I ask if you sometimes need a little more coverage? Well, even though you have purchased a tube of Moisturizing or Mattifying, some people find that having a tube of the same color in the Concealing formula is great for those days when you need a little more cover up. It is also a great for hiding under eye circles, blemishes, redness and it makes an excellent eye color base as well, May I add this to your order today?” These are only some of the ways you can increase sales through Add-on selling techniques. It is merely making your clients aware of the other choices they have and reminding them. We are only here to make sure they get the fullest benefits from Illuminaré Cosmetics and you are whom they rely on for this! Professional sales people will always keep the customer’s interest and her needs in mind for the future. Building her trust in you is important. It is better to suggest than to push so that you remain in her trust. It is also better to suggest than to merely take orders, otherwise you are not fully helping her to know what other great products she may be missing out on! How do I know what color to pick? We suggest buying a trial pack of the three formulas in three of the middle shades if you are not sure what to get. We offer five shades in the full size tubes. Try matching your face to the color of your neck and chest area, for a more “natural” look. If you feel you may be “in between” shades, you can combine two colors and create a custom match or use a lighter shade to highlight or a darker shade as a bronzer! 2. What formula would be best for me? Everyone’s skin changes from day to day and can be dry, normal or oily depending on a number of factors. If you tend to have dry skin or live in a very dry climate, choose Moisturizing Formula. If you have normal, combination, or problem-prone skin, choose the Concealing formula. If you live in a humid climate, desire an all day foundation, or have very oily skin, choose the Mattifying formula. It absorbs excess oils and it is also non-transferable, so it does not rub off! 3. Is there sun protection in all of your cosmetics? All of our products contain both micro-fine titanium dioxide and micro-fine zinc oxide “active ingredients”. These are recommended by Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons as being the two of the best broad spectrum non - chemical sunscreen ingredients available. They stay at the same protection factor all day. All of our products have been formally tested for both UVA and UVB and have an SPF rating of SPF 20 for foundations. The makeup is formally labeled Broad Spectrum. 4. Are your products non-comedogenic and hypo-allergenic? We don’t label our products as such because the terms are not recognized by the FDA as having any value. Yet, all of our ingredients were selected to be non-sensitizing and gentle enough to be used even after laser resurfacing. Our line is carried in many acne skincare clinics for its outstanding ingredients as well. 5. I cannot use products that contain salicylate or plant extracts. Does your makeup have these ingredients? No. We made them without any salicylate or plant extracts, so they are perfect for those of you who need salicylate free products and for those with sensitive skin or allergies like fibromyalgia. 6. Does it contain Gluten? Parabens? Nano- Particles? Do you test on animals? We never test on animals or use any of the above ingredients. 7. Can you tell me what the ingredients are? They are printed on every product box and available on our website. 8. What if I fall asleep with the products on will that harm my skin? All the products are so gentle and safe you can sleep in them. 9. How do I care for my brushes and sponges? Make sure to always clean your sponge or brushes with soap and water after use to keep them fresh for the next use. Our nylon foundation and concealer brushes can be cleaned with soap and water. Make sure only the bristles (and not the handle) are exposed to water. The Fast Application Sponge is machine washable and will not break down. 10. Can I use treatment products underneath the foundations? Yes. It is perfectly fine to use Retin-A, glycolic acid, vitamin C serums and other treatments under our foundations because our formulas will not cause any interference with their effectiveness. Page 16 August 13, 2012 11. Do I need to reapply the makeup to keep the SPF the same during the day? No, unlike cosmetics that use chemical sunscreen ingredients that break down and degrade in effectiveness during the day, you don’t need to reapply our product to keep the same SPF or same level of UVA protection. Our non-chemical sunscreen minerals stay the same all day long as long as they are on the skin. 12. Is this makeup good to use following micro-dermabrasion or Laser Resurfacing treatments? You can wear the Moisturizing Formula or the Concealing Formula immediately following any micro-dermabrasion treatment to decrease inflammation and to cover any redness. You must have your Dermatologist approve of when to begin using any makeup after your skin has healed following laser resurfacing. 13. What if I have dry skin but want the matte finish of the Mattifying formula? If you have dry skin but still want the finish of your skin to look matte, you can still use the oil-absorbing Ultimate formula provided you use a good moisturizer underneath and use the Concealing formula underneath the eye and on eye lid area. 14. Do you use any animal or insect derived coloring agents? No we do not use any animal or even insect derived ingredients or coloring agents like Carmine which is crushed shells of certain cactus dwelling beetles. 15. What cleanser should I use? Any good foaming cleanser will remove the makeup. Dermatologist recommended products and Dove, Basis or Neutrogena cleansing bars work well too. The Mattifying Mineral foundation and the eye colors are more difficult to remove. You may use a silicone based cleanser or use a washcloth in conjunction with your current face wash. 16. Will your foundation change colors on me during the day? Our foundation colors are made of pure intense pigments (iron oxides). We don’t use artificial dyes or carmine to color any of our foundations or blushes. 17. Will I need to touch up with powders? There is no need to touch up unless you briskly wipe your skin with a cloth or rub hard and remove some of the product from the skin. The Moisturizing Formula and the Concealing Formula formulas will stay on if you don’t rub them off, but the Mattifying formula will not move, budge or come off even if you rub it with a towel all day until you use a cleanser to remove it. Translucent powder can be used over the Moisturizing Formula and the Concealing Formula if desired, but the Mattifying formula is so ultra-matte that powder isn’t needed at all. Page 17
