How much Solar Power do I need?
Step #1: First things first, CONSERVATION.
Before you begin to “size” a solar system for your existing home, Texas Solar Power Company
recommends that you implement several energy management and conservation techniques in order
to reduce your overall need for energy:

Change all incandescent and halogen light sources to compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs).
Home Depot is a great source for these indoor or outdoor lamps and fixtures. Most compact
fluorescent lamps will fit into existing lamp sockets. This will result in double savings – fewer
watts used to light a space AND less A/C used to cool down the air around those little heat lamps!
Wherever possible, add additional insulation to your attic walls and floors. Use pipe insulation on
heated water pipes. Insulate your hot water heater.
Programmable thermostats can make a significant difference if you routinely leave your house for
extended periods. Some electric companies offer these at reduced prices.
Add shading devices and/or solar screens to your east, south, and west-facing windows.
However, during winter months, you may want to take off the south-facing screens in order to
gain solar heat.
If you have old appliances, consider upgrading. Today’s appliances are much more energy
efficient than those made as few as 5 years ago. We highly recommend that you purchase only
Energy Star rated appliances and air conditioning equipment.
Use natural gas or propane appliances where possible for cooking, central heating, water
heating, and for your clothes dryer. Better yet, dry your clothes via solar (clothesline)!
Step #2: What do you want to do with the power?
If you are already served by a power company, it is considerably cheaper to purchase a “grid-tie”
system. If you want to be totally independent of your energy company and/or you need electricity in a
location that is not yet served by your energy company and it would be very expensive to connect,
you will want to consider a “Battery Stand-Alone” system. A “Battery Back-up” system is a
combination of the two systems, where batteries are used as a back up for a power outage in an
emergency situation.

Grid-tie: You generate power during the day (while the sun is out) so if you’re producing
more than you’re using, your meter will run backwards. Your energy company supplies the
power you use at night, so your meter will run forwards. This push-pull will “net” at the end of
the month with a balance either in the customer’s favor or in the electric company’s favor. In
this dynamic, the power company acts as a huge energy storage device/battery.

Battery Stand-Alone: Along with the solar panels and support system, you will need to
purchase batteries. Your solar panels charge the batteries and you then draw energy
needed for your house from the batteries. You would need to determine all energy needs
and make sure your system is large enough to acquire and store enough energy.

Battery Back-Up: This is a hybrid system that is useful when power goes out. You can predetermine which appliances should never be without energy, and then store that needed
power. For example, you might have emergency back up for your refrigerator, computer, and
4 lights.
Step #3: Consider how much power you actually use.
Realistically, you will probably look to supplement your power needs via solar (“grid-tie” as described
above) rather than use a Battery Stand-Alone system. If you want more information about battery
back up and true system sizing, please let us know – we have an overview you can use to determine
your full power needs. However, if you simply want an understanding of how much electricity you use
and how much a solar system will produce, follow the steps below.
One way to look at the math:
1. Solar systems are generally sized in 1 kW – 6 kW (and larger) systems. A typical size
is 3 kW.
2. 3 kW, or 3 kilowatts = 3,000 watts
3. A 3 kW system will generate around 3,000 watts per hour
4. Multiply the per hour generation by 5.4 which is an average number of sun hours in a
day (3,000 x 5.4 = 16,200)
5. Multiply the new total by the average number of days in a month (16,200 x 30.5 =
487,620)
6. Multiply the new total by .77. This is the “derating” factor, or the amount of energy
lost when DC current is turned into AC current. (487,620 x .77 = 375,467)
7. So, a 3 kW system will generate about 375,467 watt-hours per month, or about 375
kWh.
8. Now compare this number with the kWh usage noted in your electric bill. How many
kWh do you use in a typical month? Twice this amount? Then you would save
roughly ½ your electric bill if you installed a 3 kW system.
9. Consider how much money you save per month to figure out how long it will take to
pay off your system.
Another way to look at the math – in reverse:
1. Take a look at your electric bill to find the number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) you use in
a month. Remember that your summer bills may be higher than those in winter (or
vice versa) so determine an average.
2. Multiply your kWh by 1000 to get a number in terms of watts.
3. Divide this number by the average number of days in a month: 30.5
4. Divide the resulting number by the average number of good hours of sunlight per
day: 5.4
5. Now divide the resulting number by the output of the solar module you intend to use.
A standard is 175 watts.
6. The resulting number is about how many modules you would need to meet all your
power needs.
Step #4: Information to keep in mind when considering a solar system.
A. Up to 30% of the final cost of installation can be taken as a federal tax credit.
Previous versions of this credit had a cap of $2,000; there is no longer a cap.
B. The most productive system is located on a South- or West-facing roof (or area) that
is shade-free from 9 am – 3 pm every day of the year.
C. Generally speaking, you will need ~ 1 square foot of space for every 10 watts. So a
3 kW system would take ~ 300 square feet; a 4 kW system would take ~ 400 square
feet.
D. Solar panels can weather routine hailstorms. If a hailstorm breaks car windshields, it
can break you solar panels. Storms of this intensity are rare, but do happen. Once
your system is on your house, it is covered by your homeowner’s insurance.
E. You do not need to size a system to meet all your energy needs. You will remain a
customer of your electric company, so you can use more (or less) power as needed.
F. When considering “payback” time, think about the price of electricity per kWh. Has it
increased in the past? Will it increase in the future? By how much? We do not know
the answer either, but the question should be factored in to your decision-making.
G. All energy providers are obligated to allow “net-metering” which means that the
electric meter must be able to run backwards (i.e. when you are generating
electricity). However, they are not obligated to pay you a set $ amount, or anything
at all, if you generate more energy than you use in a month. Check with your energy
provider to find out their particular “Tariff Agreement”.
H. Be sure to check with your Homeowners’ Association before committing to a solar PV
installation. For some odd reason that we simply cannot imagine, some are opposed
to the “look” of solar.

Solar Rebates – Oncor
Texas Solar Power Company (TXSPC) is participating in Oncor’s “Take a Load Off, Texas” solar
photovoltaic program. Through this program, we are able to install solar systems to help customers
reduce energy consumption. TXSPC is not employed by and does not represent Oncor or the “Take
a Load Off, Texas” effort. This document is our overview of their rebate program. Please see
www.takealoadofftexas.com for more information.
Should you choose Texas Solar Power Company to design and install your solar system, we will
handle the logistics and paperwork for you.
Why rebates?
“Take a Load Off, Texas” is provided by Oncor as part of the company’s commitment to reduce
energy consumption, energy demand, and carbon emissions. The Public Utility Commission of Texas
helps to oversee the programs and establishes the incentive fees paid to the Service Providers.
Who is eligible?
Oncor Energy is a transmission and distribution company that
provides electricity to hundreds of retail electricity providers and
their customers across Texas. You might be one of their
customers through your electricity provider without realizing it.
There are two ways to see if your power company contracts with
Oncor (and thus, if you are eligible for Oncor rebates):
1. Check your electric bill for the following company ID
numbers: 44372 or 17699. They will be displayed
in the following format: 10 44372 000 1234567
2. Access the following website and enter your zip
code: http://oncor.com/electricity/territory/

provided only as a general reference. Not all
customers in this service territory receive
electric service from Oncor Electric Delivery.
How much can you get?
The “Take a Load Off, Texas” program provides an incentive of up to $2.46 per installed watt with a
maximum of $24,600. So, for example:
•
a 2kW (2,000 Watt) system would receive $4,920 in rebates;
•
a 6kW (6,000 Watt) system would be rebated $14,760;
•
a 10kW (10,000 Watt) system would earn the maximum rebate of $24,600.
How does the program work?
The customer participation process, in summary, is as follows:
1. Customers work with service providers (such as Texas Solar Power Company) to determine
eligibility and define the technical specifications of a solar electric system suitable for their
property.
2. The selected service provider completes and submits the following to the Program Manager:
a. Project Pre-Approval Application which provides technical details of the proposed
system,
b. Oncor Interconnection Application which provides technical information about the
proposed system so that a customer’s generating facilities may be effectively evaluated
by their power company for interconnection with the utility system.
3. The Program Manager reviews the Application, and either approves it or informs the
customer/service provider of the reasons for denial.
4. If approved, the indicated incentive dollar amount is reserved for the approved customer for 6
months. The system must be installed within that time period.
5. The service provider constructs the proposed system, submits a final application form, and
passes a program inspection (if selected for inspection).
6. Oncor sends an incentive check either to the customer or to the customer’s selected service
provider.
7. Oncor will install and maintain metering equipment to track energy inflows (energy delivered
from the distribution system to the customer) and outflows (energy delivered from the
customer to the distribution system) on separate registers, in compliance with rules developed
by the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
8. A customer’s retail electric provider is responsible for retail sales of energy provided to the
customer (inflows), and may contract with the customer for the purchase of energy provided to
the distribution system by the customer (outflows). Customers should contact their retail
electric provider for more information about the availability and terms of compensation
for outflows.
Other Financial Incentives:
•
Federal Income Tax Credit In addition to the rebate, you can take advantage of the
renewable energy federal income tax credit for a full 30% of the system cost (after rebates).
This is true for Solar Hot Water systems as well, except that the credit for a Solar Hot Water
system is capped at $2,000.
•
Texas Property Tax Exemption The Texas property tax code exempts from taxation the
increased amount of the appraised property value that arises from the installation of solar
electric, solar water heating, or wind energy systems.

The Sunmodule Plus heralds an innovative new module concept from SolarWorld AG.
The fully automated production process at the SolarWorld factories creates a quality of

11. Customer Signature
The undersigned (hereinafter “Customer”) is an electric delivery customer of Oncor Electric Delivery
Company LLC (“Oncor”), and has submitted to participate in the Take a Load Off, Solar PV Program (the
“Program”) offered by Oncor and implemented by Frontier Associates and Clean Energy Associates
(“Implementer”). In consideration of participation in the Program, and for other good and valuable
consideration, the receipt, adequacy and legal sufficiency of which are hereby acknowledged, Customer
hereby agrees as follows:

That Customer hereby attests to their intent to purchase and install the proposed system
described in this pre-application within the applicable incentive reservation period contingent
upon approval of this incentive reservation request. Customer understands and accepts that
Oncor reserves the right to claim all renewable energy credits or other environmental credits
associated with projects receiving Oncor incentives under this program.

That the submission of an application by Customer to participate in the Program does not
guarantee receipt of incentives unless the Program guidelines have been met. Program specific
roles, responsibilities, requirements, policies and guidelines are subject to change and are
covered in the latest version of the Take A Load Off, Texas Solar PV Program Guidebook.

That incentives associated with the Program are only for energy efficiency measures installed at
the Customer site(s) that receive service from Oncor, as evidenced by an Electric Service
Identifier (ESI ID) number, and that Oncor may withhold incentive payments committed to the
Customer if the project site is proven to not receive service from Oncor.

That the incentive will only be paid to the Customer after receipt of post-project documentation
and verification.

That, while Oncor is offering and providing incentive payments to the Customer based on the
energy efficiency project, Oncor is not supervising the work performed for the Customer and is
not responsible in any way for proper completion of that work or proper performance of any
equipment purchased. Oncor is simply providing funding to assist Customer in implementing
energy efficiency savings and/or energy generation measures. Oncor does not guarantee any
results by its approval of the Customer Participation Agreement, payment of incentives, or by any
other of its actions.

That Oncor may include a description of this project, including the Customer’s name, organization
name, or companies name (if applicable), services provided, project cost and energy savings
and/or generation, in reports, studies, and other documentation required by Oncor, the Public
Utility Commission of Texas, and Texas Legislature. Oncor will treat all other information
gathered in evaluations as confidential and report it only in the aggregate.

That Oncor is not responsible for any tax liability imposed on the Customer as a result of payment
of the incentives and the Customer should consult a tax attorney to determine any potential tax
liabilities as a result of receiving incentives for energy efficiency savings and/or energy generation
measures. Oncor is not providing tax advice, and any communication by Oncor is not intended or
written and cannot be used for the purpose of avoiding penalties under the Internal Revenue
Code.

That, in the event of a dispute between the Customer and Service Provider (the contractor
qualified to participate in the Program) or the Program Implementer, the Customer may file a
complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas concerning the Service Provider and/or
Program Implementer and that Oncor will play no such role in resolving such dispute.

To provide Oncor, Implementer, and/or Service Provider with access to and/or copies of the
Customer’s utility bills, project documentation, all invoices related to the purchase and installation
of the energy efficiency measure, and technical and cost information related to or arising from the
project or its participation the Program.

To provide any Service Provider or independent measurement and verification person selected
by Oncor or the Public Utility Commission of Texas, upon three (3) days’ prior verbal notice, with
full and complete access to the Customer project site for any purpose related to, or arising from,
the Program.

Customer shall not use the Oncor or Take a Load Off, Texas trademarks without written approval
by Oncor.

Customer shall not communicate with the media about the Program without written authorization
and coordination with Implementer and Oncor.

THAT ANY REVIEW, INSPECTION, OR ACCEPTANCE BY ONCOR OF THE PROJECT SITE,
PROJECT, OR THE DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, INSTALLATION, OPERATION OR
MAINTENANCE OF THE MEASURES IS SOLELY FOR THE INFORMATION FOR THE
INFORMATION OF ONCOR AND THAT, IN PERFORMING ANY SUCH INSPECTION OR
REVIEW OR IN ACCEPTING THE MEASURES, ONCOR MAKES NO REPRESENTATION OR
WARRANTY WHATSOEVER, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT
LIMINITATION WARRANTY OR MECHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR

Background
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (Section 1335) established a 30% tax credit up to $2,000
for the purchase and installation of residential solar electric and solar water heating
property and a 30% tax credit up to $500 per 0.5 kilowatt for fuels cells. Initially scheduled
to expire at the end of 2007, the tax credits were extended through December 31, 2008
by Section 206 of the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006.
In October 2008, through the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (Division B,
Section 106), the tax credits were extended once again – until December 31, 2016 – and
a new tax credit for small wind energy systems and geothermal heat pump systems was
created. In February of 2009 the maximum tax credit was lifted for solar hot water and
the structure of the tax credit was revised.
