What is a data centre
2
Increase the temperature
Visual result of experiment carried out in the R&D data centre in IBM Dublin
During the experiment the flow rate of chilled water supply was reduced.
Caution: transient response times increase!
3
So what’s the research all about
To increase overall temperatures we need
to control and manage the inlets
To control and manage the inlets we need
to know at what temperature they are
Squish
Cold-spots
Just-right
It can be costly and disruptive to deploy
1000’s of sensors
Hot-spots
What if we can use previous knowledge
gained from gathering all this data from
other data centres to make a prediction
on ours without the cost.
4
What are Knowledge-based models
5
Example of data sets
386496 data points
distributed geospatially on 8 layers
Image removed
217728 data points
distributed geospatially on 8 layers

The research is based on access to
over 100 data sets like these,
available from locations all over the
world.

Clusters
Pulling together knowledge
Hybrid of knowledge-based
model and simplified physics model,
but that’s for another day!
