VOLCANOES. What is a volcano? A volcano is a mountain that opens below to a pool of molten rock called a magma chamber below the surface of the earth. When the pressure builds up, eruptions take place. As well as lava and rock, a volcano can trigger all these things: tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and land slides. 7 Facts about volcanoes. 1. There are 1510 active volcanoes in the world many of them are in the ring of fire. 2. The word volcano actually comes from comes the name of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. 3. The biggest known volcano in our solar system is on Mars. It’s called Olympus Mons and it measures a gigantic 373 miles wide and 13 miles high! 4. There are even volcanoes found on the ocean floor and even under icecaps, such as some of the volcanoes in Iceland. 5. There are 3 stages of a volcano, (active, dormant and extinct.) 6. Some volcanoes are so big they are called a super volcano. 7. They go boom. Where to find volcanoes THE RING OF FIRE The tectonic plates are moving pushing up and the magma below rises forming a volcano and when the pressure builds up eruptions take place. The ring of fire is on the edge of several plates pushing against others so there are lots of volcanoes there. Incredible volcanoes pictures of Volcanoes around the world. Mount Vesuvius, Italy The biggest eruption of Vesuvius was about 1900 years ago. The eruption that destroyed Pompeii. The bay by Napoli is still part of the super volcano so Napoli beware! It has one of the biggest magma chambers in the world. Popocatepetl, Mexico Popocatepetl, which the is name the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 metres. A plume of steam and ash rises above it. Tambora, Indonesia The volcano that killed 92,000 people in 1 eruption. It erupted in 1815. And it was the biggest eruption in human history, but not for long! It is a huge volcano, but it used to be bigger the eruption was so violent it blew some of it apart. Yellowstone, America If this volcano erupts it will be the biggest natural disaster ever. Its 40,00 years over due so it could erupt soon. And then the most of USA will be covered with ash. Here is a picture of what Yellowstone national park will look like if Yellowstone erupts Lake Taupo, New Zealand It’s not a volcano anymore. When it erupted in 1800 years ago it blew itself apart, and became a lake. And when it erupted even Spain was covered in ash, luckily no-one lived in New Zealand then! Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland Nicknamed the big E and you can see why! When it erupted in 2010 it cancelled jet flights in Europe because the volcanic ash would put a gloop into the engines and the jets would crash and go boom How I did it I did it practically all by my self and my mum and dad helped me a bit. I went to the natural history museum and that helped me. My dad told me about some volcanoes and I researched the volcanoes and got the information. That’s all folks!
