J. Craig Venter Institute creates a
synthetic bacterial genome that is
a copy of an existing genome.
This synthetic genome is then
transplanted into a host bacterium
to create what they call a
“synthetic cell”…and the ethical
discussion booms!

• USDA officially approves DNA
barcoding for seafood in hopes
of preventing the issue of the

Vaccine
Human trials of a malaria
vaccine are underway and
showing positive results.
This could be the first vaccine

2013 Macaw Genome Sequenced
The complete genome of a Scarlet
Macaw is sequenced at the Schubot
Exotic Bird Health Center in the
College of Veterinary Medicine &
Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M.
Macaws can live 50 to 75 years and
are considered to be among the most
intelligent and affectionate of birds.
The genome may help us understand
the genetic factors that influence
longevity and intelligence.
