CW. Pollution and destruction of natural habitats. Date. Starter. Copy. Stewardship. Some Christians believe God made us stewards of the earth. A steward looks after something. Some Christians believe they have a duty to look after the world and the living things within it. Homework. Find out and learn the meaning of each of these words. Acid rain, fossil fuels, climate change, global warming, deforestation. All : Identify and describe ways in which humans can harm the planet. Most : Understand the harmful effects of human activity upon natural habitats. Some: Explain why religious people are concerned about these environmental issues. Key word assessment 1.Explain briefly what is meant by acid rain. 2 marks. 2.Explain briefly what is meant by the ‘Assisi declarations’. 2 marks. 3.Explain briefly what is meant by biodegradable. 2 marks. The Natural world. Environmental problems. Some of the environmental problems we face today, such as droughts, were known to our ancestors but are now experienced more frequently. Others are new problems, resulting from modern technology. ACID rain Rain has become more acidic because of the gases and fumes we release into the atmosphere when we burn fossil fuels like coal. The wind carries the air pollution from heavily industrialised countries like Britain to other countries, where it falls in acid rain. This affects. •Water in lakes and streams : fish and plants are killed. • Trees: leaf loss and damage. •Soil: soil erosion occurs when rains wash away soil which use to be protected by tree roots and the leaf canopy. •Buildings: some of the most beautiful buildings in Europe are crumbling because of the chemical reactions with acid rain and stone. •Health: contaminated water and food lead to illness. Pollution of rivers and lakes This is caused by agricultural, domestic and industrial waste. Such pollution: • Kills marine life •Affects water quality causing health problems •Makes rivers dirty and smelly •Enters the food chain, and harms animals and humans. Complete the table below using the worksheet The Natural world environmental problems. Description. Acid rain. Pollution of rivers and lakes. Pollution of seas. Modern farming methods. Global warming. Deforestation Depletion of natural resources. Effects. Modern farming methods Using pesticides and fertilisers on agricultural land can: Contaminate drinking water and human breast milk, Kill wildlife. Sea pollution The sea is polluted by oil slicks, the dumping of industrial and domestic waste and acid rain. Sea pollution leads to: Toxic algae that kill marine life and contaminate seafood Dirty beaches Damage to seabirds, seals and other animals. http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=uvqU_L5PZtk http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=BAIOjoTFhR0 Complete the table below using the worksheet The Natural world environmental problems. Sea pollution leads to: Toxic algae that kill marine life and contaminate seafood Dirty beaches Damage to seabirds, seals and other animals Modern farming methods Using pesticides and fertilisers on agricultural land can: Contaminate drinking water and human breast milk Kill wildlife. Global warming The greenhouse gas we produce lead to global warming, which may result in: A rise in sea level, causing flooding and the erosion of coastlines damaging homes, crops, livestock. Having an impact upon the quality of peoples lives and even putting people’s lives at risk. Changes in vegetation and an increase in the number and size of deserts Changes in migration patterns, intensifying droughts and flooding. More extreme weather events such as storms and hurricanes Other environmental issues include •Extinction of species through over-fishing and hunting. •Deforestation, the destruction of rainforests leading to the loss of species and climate change. •Air pollution, which harms vegetation and humans. •Toxic watse, which can affect the health of those who live near disposal sites. •GM foods, genetically modified crops, which may affect the environment and human health •Thinning of ozone in the upper atmosphere.
