Fishers High School Social Studies Recommendations
1. PRINCIPLES OF GEOGRAPHY/HISTORY OF THE WORLD (9-10)
Specific geographic and historical skills and concepts of historical geography will be used to explore global themes
primarily but not exclusively for the period beginning in 1000 CE. The historical geography concepts used to explore the
global themes include change over time, origin, diffusion, physical systems, cultural landscapes, and spatial distribution
and interaction. This course is designed to nurture perceptive, responsible citizenship, encourage and support the
development of critical thinking skills and lifelong learning. This course meets CORE 40 graduation requirements.
Recommendations for Principles of Geography/History of the World
• Student requires shorter activities and projects
• Student needs reading assignments to be shorter, with basic vocabulary terms
• Student requires a structured learning environment
• Students learn best through hands-on activities
2. WORLD HISTORY (9-12)
World History is designed as a survey course examining civilizations from ancient to modern times. Particular attention will
be paid to the cultural, historical, and geographical influences on the development of each civilization. Projects and
current event discussions will be used to enhance learning. This course meets CORE 40 graduation requirements.
Recommendations for World History
• Student works well both in groups and independently
• Student completes assignments carefully and on time
• Student has good reading comprehension skills and writes well
3. AP WORLD HISTORY (9-12)
A year long college course taught in high school with a college-level text. Students will study the development and
interaction of world cultures throughout history by applying a wide range of factual knowledge as they analyze themes.
This course emphasizes happenings from 1000 CE to the present day. A summer reading assignment will be made.
This course satisfies a Core 40 requirement in Social Studies and fulfils and AHD – AP requirement
For an International Baccalaureate Diploma, AP World History will satisfy the freshmen level requirement.
Recommendations for AP World History
• Student exhibits strong writing skills
• Student will excel with extensive outside reading assignments
• Student works independently and shows initiative and responsibility
• Student analyzes material rather than summarizes
• Student demonstrates the ability to manage a challenging amount of work
• Student should have a minimum of 93% in current social studies class
• Student communicates effectively in class discussion
• Student currently or previously enrolled in honors classes
