Syllabus for
Geometry
2013 - 2014
One Credit
Teacher – Bryan Winkle
Course Description
This course is designed to place emphasis on discovery, proof, and the application of
geometric relationships and principles so that the student will have an understanding of
and appreciation for geometric concepts. The course contains a study of points, lines,
planes, logic, angles, triangles, similarity and congruence, similar polygons, basic
trigonometry, circles, formulas, surface area, and volume.

 To access my school webpage go to www.williamstown.kyschools.us Click on
the Sr. High button, then click on the Teacher Websites button. Then find my
name and click on it.
 On the webpage you will find my schedule, supply lists, calendar for assignments,
and announcements for upcoming major quizzes and tests. Please make sure to
monitor this page!
Tests and Constructed- Responses: (100 points each)
 Make-up tests will only be allowed for excused absences and must be done so
after or before school hours by appointment.
 A review of the material will be held on the day(s) before the test. This may
include a practice test, a review sheet, or something similar. If you are absent on
the day of the review you still must take the test the following day.


You will have a one-time opportunity to redo learning targets that you missed on
a test per test. This must be done after or before school. This will not take place
during class!
Constructed Responses will be assigned periodically throughout the school year
will be grades on rubrics attached (25 points each)
o This will usually be done if the form of live scoring and will also aide in
review for the unit tests.
o 25 points for a 4, 22 points for a 3, 18 points for a 2, 10 points for a 1
Homework and Class work: (10 points each)
 Homework assignments will be completed on the MathXL website:
www.mathxlforschool.com
 Make sure to save this website as one of your bookmarks.
 Also make sure you are going to the correct website!
 To receive a “10” on a homework assignment you must receive at least an 80%
and have tried all of the problems.
o Later in the year after you have become accustomed to the website you
will have to receive a 100% to get “10’s”
 There will be 2 or 3 assignments per unit to be completed on the website. You
will have a minimum of a week to complete each assignment.
 It is your responsibility to complete these assignments. There will be no
extensions or make ups!
 If you do not have internet access you will be required to get a print out or
stay after school to use the internet!
Quizzes:
 Daily 5 Point Quizzes (5 points)
o Each day we will take a 5 question quiz over that day’s lesson, or previous
unit material, or even old material to keep it fresh in your minds the last 10
minutes of class except on test/quiz and activity days.
o You may use your notes and your learning partner only on these quizzes.
o If you are absent you will not make up. The following day we will go
over the quizzes.
o Each quiz will be graded out of 4 points. Therefore you have an
opportunity to get a 5 out of 4 points. (Extra Credit!)

Major Quizzes (1 point per question)
o There will be 2 to 3 major quizzes each unit that will be announced.
o You will receive a study guide the day prior to each quiz that you may use
as well as your notes on these quizzes. Your Daily 5 Point Quizzes will
also be a great resource for these quizzes.
o These quizzes will also align with the online mathXL assignments.
Warm Ups (Extra Credit):






You will need to keep a stack of notecards.
At the beginning of each week we will start a new notecard for warm ups.
Warm ups will consist of 1 or 2 PLAN or EOC practice questions per day.
For each question answered correctly you will receive a point of extra credit..
Notecards will be taken up daily to record results.
You will have 60 seconds per question just like the real exam.
Class Materials:
 A 2 inch 3 ring binder
 A set of page dividers (need at least 4)
o Homework, notes, quizzes, writing assignments
 Loose leaf notebook paper
 Graph paper
 Notecards
 A box of tissues or a roll of paper towels (optional).
 Pencils or black pens only
 Recommended: graphing calculator (not required).
Rules
1.) Be on time. (Inside the door by the bell)
2.) Be prepared to work hard when the bell rings.
3.) Respect each other’s (includes staff and other students) thoughts and opinions
and school property.
a.) Any inappropriate language will result in a detention.
4.) Address any problems and/or concerns with the teacher.
Consequences
1st offense - A verbal warning.
2nd offense – Parent/Guardian Contact
3rd offense – Detention
4th offense – Sent to the Principal’s office.
Class Procedures
Beginning of Class
 Have a seat in your assigned seat before the bell rings and begin on the
warm up exercise.
 During Warm Ups I will pass out the previous days 5 point quiz.
 Once completed we go over the warm up and 5 point quiz.
End of Class
 The last 10 minutes of class we will take the Daily 5 Point Quiz. I will
dismiss the class, not the bell. Please stay in your seats till you are
dismissed.
 Before the class is dismissed a calculator check must take place!
Absences

If you miss a class, check the assignments clipboard on the back wall and
grab any handouts and/or worksheets from the wall pocket. Excused work
will be due three days after you return. Also bring your absence slip from
the office so that I can keep records on you. You may also find the
assignments listed on my webpage.
Food or Drink
 Food and drink is not allowed in the class.
Restroom and Hall Passes
 You may use the restroom after instructional time is finished by
permission of the teacher. You must sign out and back in of the hall pass
book. One student at a time may be out of the class room. You must take
your hall pass (your planner!). You are allowed 3 hall passes a quarter.
Use them wisely!!
 Any unused hall passes will be used as extra credit.
Cabinets, Bookshelves and Desk
 Do not get into Mr. Winkle’s desk or cabinet or bookshelves without permission.
Too many items went missing last year.
Calculators
 Calculators must be signed out in class or for after school and turned directly in to
Mr. Winkle. Too many calculators have gone missing!
A-WALL
 A-WALL is for student recognition of work. Students will receive an A card to
be posted when he/she gets an A on any test or quiz.
Course Outline
Unit 1: Points, Lines, Planes, and Angles
1. I can identify and define point, line, and plane.
2. I can find the length of a line segment.
3. I can define, classify, and find measures of angles.
4. I can use the properties of complementary and supplementary angles to solve
problems.
5. I can use a compass and straight edge and technology to make geometric
constructions.
6. I can find the midpoint and distance of a segment on a coordinate plane.
Unit 2: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
1. I can identify parallel and lines and planes, perpendicular lines and planes, and
skew lines in a plane.
2. I can identify and find measures of corresponding, alternate-interior, alternateexterior, and consecutive angles.
3. I can use properties of parallel lines to find angle measures.
4. I can prove lines parallel using corresponding, alternate-interior, alternateexterior, and consecutive angles.
5. I can use properties of parallel and perpendicular lines to solve problems.
6. I can construct parallel and perpendicular lines using a compass and straight edge.
7. I can find the slope of two points.
8. I can write the equation of a line.
9. I can write the equation of parallel and perpendicular lines.
10. I can prove that any point on a perpendicular bisector is equidistant from the
endpoints.
11. I can use the slope to determine if lines are parallel or perpendicular on a
coordinate plane.
12. I can use the distance formula to determine is lines are congruent on a coordinate
plane.
13. I can write an equation for a line that is parallel or perpendicular to the line
through a specific point.
14. I can use pairs of lines to prove slopes are the same of parallel lines using straight
edge and protractor.
Unit 3: Transformations
1. I can use technology to create definitions of translation, rotation, and reflection.
2. I can identify a translation, reflection, rotation, and dilation.
3. I can translate, rotate, and reflect points, lines, and polygons on a coordinate plane
using technology and graph paper.
4. I can describe translations and reflections as functions with inputs and outputs.
5. I will use the distance formula and angle measure to determine if a transformation
preserves congruence.
6. I can determine the number of lines of symmetry of a polygon.
7. I can determine if a polygon has rotational symmetry and describe how a rotation
or a reflection can carry a polygon onto itself.
8. I can draw a figure using a combination of transformations.
9. I can use rotations, reflections, or translations to describe how one figure can
carry itself onto another using multiple transformations.
Unit 4: Congruency
1. I can determine congruency using translations, rotations, and reflections.
2. I can determine if two triangles are congruent given that all sides and angles are
congruent.
3. I can draw two triangles that are congruent using definitions of transformations.
4. I can use congruent triangles and polygons to solve problems.
5. I can use ASA, SSS, SAS, AAS, and HL to prove triangles congruent.
Unit 5: Triangles

Dear Parents or Guardians,
Welcome to the start of a new school year! I am truly looking forward to a great
year with your children in my class. This will be my sixth year at Williamstown High
School. If you should ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to
contact me at school. During the school day, my planning hour is from 1:50 to 2:55. If I
am unable to speak with you at that time, I will return your call as soon as possible. This
year we do have voice mail but my preference in communication will be e-mail which I
check on a regular basis. My e-mail address is [email protected].
Please feel free to contact me at any time. Also, I would like to send out notifications to
parents on upcoming quizzes, tests, and other major assignments. If you have an e-mail
account and would like to receive e-mail announcements please provide that information
at the bottom of the letter. I will also be keeping an assignments calendar on my website
in which you may check if your child has an assignment.
The students will be assessed in many different ways in my class through out the
school year. There will be a test at the end of each unit which will count for 75% of the
final grade. There will be daily 5 point quizzes that will count for 5% of the grade. As
well as a couple of major quizzes that will be given during each unit which will count for
10% of the final grade. Homework will be given online 2 to 3 times a unitthat will count
for 10% of the final grade.
I will be following the schools late work policy which is an automatic 50% if late
and will not be accepted after the unit exam. If you know that your child will be absent
from school in advance please contact me to get their assignments to insure that your
child does not fall behind in the class or check my school webpage to keep up with
assignments.
Please take a few minutes to go over the grading policies and rules and
expectations for my class on the syllabus. I want your child to succeed in my math class
and if there is any additional information that may be helpful in your child’s success
please make me aware as soon as possible.
