SCIENCE PRIMARY 6TH ATLANTIS BY MR. JOHN GALARRAGA ATLANTIS: COLEGIO IRABIA THE STORY OF A MYTH? NAME: INTRODUCTION Answer to these questions: 1. What is ATLANTIS? What does it mean in Greek? _______________________________________________________________ In here, we are going to learn a little bit about the three main characters in the story. ZEUS, POSEIDON, and ATLAS. ZEUS _______________________________________________________________ 2. Where do they say it was located? Tell me the two places! Zeus in Greek mythology is the king of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympus, and the god of the sky and thunder. Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. In most traditions he was married to Hera. _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ 3. Who was the first King of Atlantis? Why? _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ POSEIDON He was the god of the sea, as well as of horses, and, as "Earth-Shaker," of earthquakes. He was the brother of Zeus and Hades. Poseidon was given a trident during the war of the Titans and the gods. The war lasted 10 years. After the war the gods divided the earth among themselves: Zeus took the sky, Poseidon took the sea, and Hades took the underworld. 4. How was the Atlantis destroyed? _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ True or False (correct the wrong information): a- The first twins became the rulers of Atlantis. b- The Atlanteants built in the Centre a temple to honor Poseidon. c- Only Zeus decided to destroy the Atlantis. ATLAS d- Everybody knows that this is a true story. He is the son of Poseidon and Cleito (a mortal woman). He was the ruler of Atlantis. Atlas was punished by Zeus and made to bear the weight of the heavens on his back. e- Atlantis was an island very small, but very healthy. f- Two harvest were possible each year. THE STORY OF ATLANTIS Atlantis was the domain of Poseidon, god of the sea. When Poseidon fell in love with a mortal woman, Cleito, he created a small house at the top of a hill near the middle of the island and surrounded the dwelling with rings of water and land to protect her. Cleito gave birth to five sets of twin boys who became the first rulers of Atlantis. The island was divided among the brothers with the eldest, Atlas, first King of Atlantis, being given control over the central hill and surrounding areas. At the top of the central hill, a temple was built to honor Poseidon which housed a giant gold statue of Poseidon riding a chariot pulled by winged horses. It was here that the rulers of Atlantis would come to discuss laws, pass judgments, and pay tribute to Poseidon. The climate was such that two harvests were possible each year. One in the winter fed by the rains and one in the summer fed by irrigation from the canal. Surrounding the plain to the north were mountains which soared to the skies. Villages, lakes, rivers, and meadows dotted the mountains. Besides the harvests, the island provided all kinds of herbs, fruits, and nuts. An abundance of animals, including elephants, roamed the island. The vast island was huge, some people said that it was bigger than the continents we know today, and it prospered as a peaceful, wealthy, powerful and sophisticated place. For generations the Atlanteans lived simple, virtuous lives. The city of Atlantis sat just outside the outer ring of water and spread across the plain covering a circle of 11 miles (1.7 km). This was a densely populated area where the majority of the population lived. Unfortuaty all this good fortune made Atlantis’s people feel superior and had them acting spoiled and even lazy. Such behavior angered the gods, and mainly Zeus, who saw the inmortality of the Atlanteants, and gathering the other gods, they decided to punish them. They decided to destroy the Atlantis with the power of earthquakes and volcanoes. At the end of one day and one night, Atlantis was flooded and buried beneath the ocean, never to be seen again. ATLANTIS Atlantis (in Greek, Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, "island of Atlas") is the name of a legendary island first mentioned in one of Plato's book. Plato was a really famous philosopher of the ancient Greeks. Atlntis, was located next to “The pillars of Heracles”, It was a naval powered comunity that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune". Some people believe that this is not just a story told by Plato and other famous Greeks, but that Atlantis was a real place. Many people have searched for Atlantis, even claiming to have discovered artifacts. But without absolute proof, the island's existence remains one of the world's great mysteries. The people of this land possessed great wealth thanks to the natural resources found throughout their island. The island was a center for trade and commerce. As you've probably heard, the people at the Walt Disney Company liked this story well enough that they decided to turn it into an animated feature film. Others said that it was an island (dating back to at least 1400 BC ) located near Greece, in the Mediterranean sea. But that is according to the Greek mythology. QUESTION!!! QUESTION!!! Why did the gods decide to punish the Atlanteants? Why did the people of Atlantis had such a good wealth?
