They thought that they U.S. was too unprepared and weak to fight against them. They attacked Pearl Harbor in attempt to drive the United States navy out of Hawaii so that Japan could invade. “Their mission was to eradicate the American naval and air presence in the Pacific with a surprise attack.” (3) Interesting Facts • Approximately 2,400 people died at Pearl Harbor. • The attacking planes came in two waves. the first hit at 7:53 AM, the second hit at 8:55. By 9:55 it was all over. • On December 8, 1941, Congress declared war on Japan with only one vote against it. The vote against it was of Represenative Jeannette Rankin of Montana.
