Purpose: Outline of ESD Acceptance Ranges

1
High Level Outline Of Resistance and Static Voltage Charge for Items in an ESD Work Area
2
All Items – items that enter the ESD work area shall be tested to verify resistance value and static
charge properties to understand and identify if they should be in the ESD work area and proper
handling of that item be identified. It is recommended that only items that are absolutely needed
be in the ESD work area
3
Footwear – between ≥1x105 to ≤1x109 ohms
4
Work Surface - ≥1x105 to ≤1x109 ohms surface to surface and surface to ground
5
Dissipative Chair - <1x109 ohms from seat back to known building ground
6
Racks and Cabinets - <1x109 ohm, conductive also allowed
7
Wrist Straps & Groundable Smocks – Wrist Straps – ≥5x105 to <5x109 & Groundable Smocks ≥1x105 to <1x109
8
ESD Table Mats - ≥1x105 to <1x109 ohms surface to surface and surface to ground
9
Dissipative Flooring - ≥1x104 to <1x109 ohms tile to tile and tile to ground (target is 1x107 ohms
using 5 lb weights)
10
Relative Humidity - > 40% (Dew Point 50° ±3°)
11
Temperature -
12
Work Surface Storage Bins –
13
Adhesive Tape - shall not generate greater than (+/-) 200V/in when pulled from roll as measured
with an electrostatic field meter
14
Vacuum Wand - for contact to non-conductive parts of device (IHS, substrate, underfill, etc.)
resistance <1x109 ohms; for contact to conductive parts (land, pin, ball, etc.) resistance of ≥1x104
to <1x1011 ohms
15
Ionizers – if used
Rev. 1.0
70 deg F (+/-) 5 deg F or 21 deg C (+/-) 3 deg C
surface resistance of between - ≥1x105 to <1x109 and shall not induce
an electrostatic field greater than ± 200V/in measured at the location of device
shall be capable of dissipating charge of +/-1000v to +/-100v in less than 10 sec.

All Indirect Materials Used in an ESD Work Area – Should be dissipative (≥1x104 to <1x1011
shall not generate electrostatic voltage greater than +/- 200V/in,
Note: finger cots and gloves are not used for ESD protection but are to prevent cosmetic damage and it
is recommended to eliminate them
shall be static dissipative or antistatic with a surface resistance of between 1x105 Ohms and
1x109 Ohms and shall not induce an electrostatic field greater than ± 200V/in measured at the location
of device
Ohms) or Antistatic and shall not induce an electrostatic field greater than ± 200V/in measured at the
location of device (computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, lamps, trays, pens, rubber bands, cards,
instruction work sheets, paper, box knives, scissors, air guns, etc)
19
Rev. 1.0
All items that have the potential to generate a static voltage charge
greater than ± 200V/in
measured at the location of device must be kept at a minimum of 12” (305mm) from exposed product
and should be removed from the work area if possible
