TANYA CHUA
Accomplished as a performer and composer, Tanya has proven her versatility in
recording various genres of music with equal ease. Her original compositions have been
used by established regional artistes such as Faye Wong, Karen Mok, Gigi Leung,
Matilda Tao Jing Ying, Leo Ku and Valen Hsu.
Tanya’s debut English album, Bored (1997), was one of the most critically acclaimed and
fastest selling local albums in Singapore. The first single from the album, My Colour TV
Set, hit the No. 2 spot on the highly popular Perfect Ten Radio Chart. She also won the
Best Local Composition in the Singapore Hit Awards 1999, as well as the prestigious
Grand Prize in the unpublished category for her composition, Hear Me, at the Asia Song
Festival held in the Philippines. The title song of her second English album, Luck (1999)
has been snapped up as the theme song for the drama serial, The Tax Files in Singapore.
Tanya’s first self-titled Mandarin album was released in 1999 and spawned an instant hit,
Breathe. Her second Chinese album, Remember, reached the No 1 spot within the first
week of its release in March 2000. It also garnered Tanya a coveted nomination in the
Best Newcomer category in Taiwan’s biggest musical event, the 11th Golden Melody
Awards. She was specially invited to sing, at the 12th Golden Melody Awards this year,
the songs of Teresa Teng, Chang Yu-sheng and Xue Yue in a segment playing special
tribute to these late veteran singers in the music industry.
Her popularity has taken Tanya to perform for giant radio station, fm Osaka’s 30th
Anniversary Concert, The Interpeople Festival in August 2000. She was also the first
Singapore artiste to be interviewed on CNN’s acclaimed Q&A Asia series. The 93.3FM
Hit Awards, Singapore’s equivalent of the Grammys, has nominated Tanya for three
prestigious categories, including Best Female Artiste. She won Best Local composition.
Tanya recently released her third Mandarin album, ‘I Do Believe’. She has been in
Taiwan doing her album’s promotional drive and is back in Singapore to promote it here.
Tanya is also involved in the Blue Ribbon Campaign in Taiwan, which is a joint Charity
event with Giordano, Sonia Rykiel and Marie Claire. This meaningful event, held in
Taiwan in May 2001, is organised to raise funds for the children in the rural areas in
Taiwan, so that they can have more funds for better educational materials as well as to
provide a more conducive environment. Tanya’s song, Ke Yi Ai Ni Zhen Hao, taken
from her Mandarin album ‘I Do Believe’, is the theme song for this campaign.
Tanya is chosen to sing the theme song for the National Day Parade 2001, ‘Where I
Belong’, which she wrote and composed, at the National Stadium on 9th August. She also
performed the same song to the President, Senior Prime Minister and Prime Minister at
the Istana after the NDP 2001 the next day.
Tanya was also in Hong Kong to performed in Carlsberg Rock Festival together with
some other regional artistes and was in China recently to promote her mandarin album, I
Do Believe. Tanya won the Special Achievement Award at the Radio Music Awards
2001 organised by Perfect 10 98.7FM and Class 95FM.
In December 2001, Tanya recorded a cover version of Cyndi Lauper’s True Colours in
the charity CD ‘Love Is The Answer’ for Kids With Aids, KK Outreach for Kids Fund.
She has also released ‘The Best of Tanya’ a compilation of her hit songs from her CDs.
Tanya won the “COMPASS Young Composer of the Year” Award and “Top Local
Artiste of the Year” Award. She was also nominated for MTV Asia Local Artiste award.
Often known as a charitable person, Tanya was a guest celebrity in the M.A.C Love Day
(World Aids Day) selling Viva Glam Lipsticks at M.A.C counter to raise funds for people
who are affected with HIV/AIDS. She has also performed in the Asia launch of M.A.C
Viva Glam IV Lipstick Charity Event at Centro360. Come June 2002, Tanya will
perform in the Police Charity Concert to raise funds for Community Chest.
Montblanc Singapore has selected Tanya to be one of the jury members in Montblanc
Patronage Awards 2002. The Montblanc Arts Patronage Awards was established by the
Montblanc Cultural Foundation in 1992 to honour and distinguish private patrons who
have contributed significantly to the arts through the selfless giving of time, money and
effort, the awards has through the years, achieved renowned status.
Recently, Tanya’s ‘I Do Believe’ album was voted one of top 10 albums in Taiwan. She
has also won the best vocal category for the same album. Her song ‘Pin Fan Zi Ge’
garnered the best composer award in Taiwan. Tanya was nominated for Best Female
Artiste and Best Songwriter in the 13th Golden Melody Awards held in Taiwan. She was
also the guest celebrity in Silver Screen Awards 2002.
At the Singapore Music Festival 2002 held in Fort Canning Green, Tanya gave a 30minute performance showcasing her new songs for the third English Album. In
September 2002, Tanya released her third English Album Jupiter. This is the first album
co-produced by Tanya, which shows a more mellowed side of her as she experiences a
different a phase in life.
She was recently invited as one of the judges in Sing Singapore 2002 contest and will be
performing at TVBS Super Concert in Malaysia. Tanya was also guest celebrity to
catwalk at the fashion show wearing Celia Loe and Dick Lee Circa 1972’s collection in
Singapore Fashion Week 2002.
Singapore Hit Awards 2002, jointly organised by Y.E.S. 93.3FM and Radio Industry
Association (Singapore) RIAS have nominated Tanya in three categories - Best Local
Lyrics (Fish Leong’s Xing Fu De Yu Gan), Best Music Composition (Two of Us and
Fish Leong’s Xing Fu De Yu Gan) and Best Local Artiste (Mo Qi).
